I purchased Family Tree Maker software and got 3 months free at Ancestry.com.  It was a great place to start my search.  I found lots of information.  It was sometimes difficult to find but very satisfying when I did.  If ever at D. C. still go to the National Archives.  I found things there that were not found at Ancestry.com
