We know of Amy Winehouse and the troubles that follow her. We know that she has been quite the tabloid fixture over the last year (and even longer across the pond). From the public displays of drunkenness, wandering in the streets half dressed and bruising fights with her hubby she has been on one ride. Long before the circus was a hungry little girl from the Southgate area of Enfield, London who after her hot demo was picked up  got  signed to a deal while still in her teens.

Amy Winehouse's debut album, Frank, was released on Oct. 20, 2003 but was not  released in America until last year. I had already had the chance to experience this gifted young lady long before Back To Black with this cd. With the vocal swagger of Nina Simone she, apart from two covers, co-wrote every song on Frank  and delivered the goods. Many of the songs have jazz-influences with eliments of r&b and to them all she applies her raw and sassy vocal skills reminiscent of the queen of sass Sarah Vaughn.

To call attention to the standout track on this cd would be to pretty much speak about each tune but songs like Stronger Than Me, I Heard Love Is Blind, and (There Is) No Greater Love are clear examples of Amy's vocal prowess. My standout by far would have to be Take The Box....with pure emotion Winehouse croons her way through this breakup song so strongly you can feel her pain. Clearly showing that she learned well from the music of yesterday she gives a clever spin the classic tune Moody's Mood For Love which is presented here as a bonus hidden track and behind that it another bonus track that delivers the perfect ending to a wonderful cd(I will leave that to be discovered as a surprise:~).

So if you have not already take a chance to get to know Amy Winehouse before the drama at her very best with this cd. Frank differ's in contrast to BTB's nod to the 50's/60's soul sound but it still shows just what a talent she is. Here's hoping to a better year for this amazing artist.
