Picture this...A big grassy front yard laying out before a house. In the long grass is an animal with a white coat and black spots. All of a sudden this animal takes of at a high rate of speed. Now you're thinking, wow, that's a fast moving cow!
Nope, it's my dog. He looks like a cow, and prances around like a horse. His name's Barkley and he's the best dog ever. He's a Staffordshire Terrier, commonly called a pitbull. He's loyal, fun loving, absolutely loves his tug tug and squeaky tennis ball. He looovveess the car and if we're outside he just wants to sit in it. Okay that might be mine and my boyfriends fault. We took him everywhere with us, and he was never left home alone. Sooo, he probably thinks the car is his safe zone. That's one expensive tool for crate training. hehe.
Barkley has friends that he goes to the river with. He gets along with almost every dog. If a dog snaps at him, he gets this worried look on his face and backs up a little. He does tend to scare dogs off though. If we're going for a walk and he spots a dog a ways off, he starts whining like a crazy dog. You'd think someone was strangling him or something. He gets so excited to meet a new friend that he looks absolutely berserk.
He loves cuddling on the couch while we watch movies, warming up the bed under the covers for us, romping in the snow and being a dusty puff in the back of the truck when we go fourwheeling. He likes his cat siblings although he knows one of them doesn't like to be pounced, so of course that's the cat he tries to pounce. He does have his naughty dog moments, like when we started leaving him at home alone and he went through 5 remotes, and peed on anything electrical to help "get over" his separation anxiety. But he never tried to escape, and trust me, if he were any other dog wanting to roam the streets, it would not be hard for him to squeeze through a gap in our fence. But he waits for us to get home, and then goes all crazy, hyper dog on us.
He is a great dog and a great breed. A very important characteristic of this breed is their amazing love of people. Many people are surprised by the loving personality of these dogs the first time they meet one. Pit bull dogs are indeed remarkably affectionate and truly enjoy human attention. They are wonderful cuddlers, and nothing beats a belly rub. In fact, most pit bulls think they are lap dogs! Just ask them. They are also really great with kids. Barkley absolutely loves following our neighbors young girls around and when he visits his best buddy next door, they stop tearing around the yard when the toddler comes out and just walk over to him and hang out.
So if you want a best buddy go to your local humane society or animal rescue shelter and adopt one today. You won't be sorry. I'm not. In fact we're thinking about adopting one of Barkleys friends that he goes and plays with at the humane society.
