American Girl Dolls

A zillion years ago, or sometime in the 1990's, I was a graduate student doing a lot of babysitting to afford those Oodles of Noodles.  I babysat for a family with two little girls who had American Girl dolls.  I thought they were really neat dolls but when I saw the prices, I thought no way, never, never.  Well, guess what?  Now I am a Mom of a nine year daughter who is growing up so fast that I am delighted for her to have and play with her American Girl dolls.  What's even better is that the grandparents are buying them!  Thank you grandparents!

Our daughter first choose Felicity.  Felicity is Felicity Merriman, "a spunky colonial girl growing up as America is on the brink of the Revolutionary War."  Our daughter choose Felicity because Felicity has her auburn hair color and Felicity loves horses too.

Recently Kaya joined our family.  Kaya is a Native American doll and "an adventurous girl who loves riding her horse, Steps High."  Kaya arrived for our daughter's birthday wearing her deer-skin dress and moccasins.

What makes American Girl Dolls so special?

First of all, they are not "baby" dolls.  These dolls are more like your young daughter's little friends.  There are many dolls available so girls can choose one that looks like them or choose a character that they related to most.

The accessories for these dolls are endless.  My daughter plays the violin so she enjoyed getting a violin, music stand and recital dress for Felicity.  She also has a riding outfit for Felicity.  Yes, my daughter is horse crazy.  They have accessories for almost any young girl's interest including ballet, karate, skate boarding, cheer-leading, soccer, volleyball, singing, guitar...what am I leaving out?  Whatever it is, you can bet that American Girl Doll didn't overlook it.

The dolls are also very well made and so are the clothing and accessories.

American Girl Dolls Complete List:

Kit Kittredge and her best friend, Ruthie (1934)
(I haven't seen it but a Kit Kittredge movie came out this summer.)

Julie Albright and her best friend Ivy Ling  (1974)

Molly McIntire (1944)

Samantha Parkington and her friend Nellie (1904)

Josephina Montoya (1824)

Felicity Merriman and her best friend Elizabeth (1774)

Kaya (1774)

Mia is the "Girl of the Year for 2008" only available until December 3, 2008

Pleasant Company has also created a Miniature Collection of the American Girl dolls.

What I like about the American Girls Dolls is the way they connect young girls with American History.  Each doll also has a series of books that tell her story.  We really like these books and they make a great, reasonably priced gift for an American Girl doll fan or collector.  We also really like the American Girl Magazine that has absolutely no ads!

My Viewpoint:
American Girl dolls are unique and well made.  Watching my daughter and her friends, who are growing up so fast, play with their American Girl dolls makes the price (the grandparents forked over) worth it!

My daughter's first American Girl doll was Felicity too. :) We even went to Colonial Williamsburg to have Tea and the whole activity set they did there. It was great. We go to Colonial Williamsburg often so it wasn't an extra vacation, just added to the fun of the vacation. :) The dolls are quite expensive, but they did bring my daughter much joy when she was younger.

I collect dolls and carousels. I don't have any of the American Girl Dolls. They are so adorable. Great review! ;-) ~Krista Lynn

I totally love these dolls and think it must be wonderful fun for moms as well as their daughters to accumulate, accumulate, accumulate, and PLAY PLAY PLAY! These are such wholesome toys and they remind meof how much I used to love my dolls when I was a kid. Hope you can get to Chicago someday to visit the American Girl Store. By the way, take a look at my review when you get a chance -- Samantha and Nellie are about to join the ranks of the dear (doll) departed!
