American Family Insurance Review

In March of this year, my family suffered a major fire loss to our home. Most of the house burned to the ground, and what didn't burn was water and smoke damaged. At first the process of starting the claim was a relative smooth one. They set us up in a hotel for the first 11 days, then through a subcontractor, found us a rental home. In the fire we lost everything, including the cars. This is where the first problems started. The auto adjuster really tried to burn us on our vehicle values. It took a call from my agent to the adjuster's supervisor to get any kind of assistance, and then they only split the difference.

Once we had selected a fire restoration company, the large loss adjuster started being difficult to deal with. He grilled us like we were criminals, interviewing and recording conversations. He then started fighting with the Contractors over costs. He denied liability on the siding, cabinets, windows, decks and porches and some of the smoke damaged sheet rock. I again had to get my agent to intervene. Once I did that, the adjuster stopped returning my phone calls and e-mails. My agent had to get a hold of the adjusters supervisor just to get the smallest of questions of problems addressed.  We are still about a week out from being able to move home, and the only salvation is that the adjuster assigned to out contents, has been wonderful. So once our claim is finished, I will be paying the higher premium to switch to USAA. Their service is supposed to be much better and if that is the case, the extra money paid will be worth it.
