I have had my American Express Starwood card for about 10 years. It is an American Express card that allows you to earn points for stays at any Starwood property (W, Westin, Regis, Sheraton, etc)-- or, you can convert your points to miles. I am hooked and use it to buy nearly EVERYTHING!
How you earn points.
You earn 1 point for every dollar spent and then double points when staying at a Starwood property. It seems that I somehow manage to accumulate a lot of points every year.
Annual Percentage
To be honest, I dont check out the annual percentage rate since I pay off my bills monthly-- so they might not have a compelling percentage.
Redeeming Starwood points
Starwood has so many great hotels, that there is always a good option. You also dont need that many points to redeem for a free stay. The great thing is that when traveling through a small town on a road trip, we can easily get one or two rooms and never have to pay! I love it. Also, there are no blackout dates and free nights start as low as 2,000 Starpoints.
You can also transfer Starpoints to over 30 major airlines, almost always on a 1:1 basis.
Cost of the Starwood AmEx Card
I believe I pay $60 per year to maintain my card. It is money well spent given how many free hotel stays I have received. My husband uses the USAA points program, (he loves it!) and he often gets the airline tickets and I get the hotel stays. So, we have our bases covered.
Online Account Access
You can view up-to-date billing information online, including transactions, charges, and payments.
Customer Service
Whenever I have had a problem, I just call customer service and they clear my account with no hassle. I very much appreciate that. I once had my account stolen by someone overseas and they managed all of the charges and it was no hassle to me at all.
How does Starwood American Express compare to others?
I did the math at some point and from a points perspective it was overwhelmingly in support of Starwood. I havent done the math in a while. And, quite honestly, even if the math werent as in favor of them, I would still stick with them bc of their exceptional service to me.
