Have had good luck with the slider version.

Overall
Rated 4 out of 5

It appears that others have had problems with their windows but I've had 2 American Craftsman slider windows with low E and argon for well over 6 years and have not had any problems with them. I special ordered them from home depot and installed them per the instructions. They open, close and latch without any problems. They were a huge upgrade from the single pane aluminum windows they replaced and I would purchase them again if i had to do it over. The 4 stars is only because they came with a fiberglass screens instead of aluminum ones, but a minor gripe. Again this review is for the Slider version.

American Craftsman; No Customer Care At All

Overall
Rated 1 out of 5

American Craftsman Screen Door -- I bought an American Craftsman complete sliding porch door system from Home Depot. Workmanship was pathetic as it did not stand up to any regular traffic. The screen door has a set of wheels on the top and the bottom which allows it to slide - one broke instantly and it was not something I could fix. When I contacted the customer care center I got the run around. Withoput question on of the worst customer service groups i have ever seen, and i have been in both corporate and retail public relations for 20 years. This also makes Home Depot look bad as they seem to be stuck selling an inferior product. There are manuy other options - please stay away from this company as the after sale set up is "do not help the customer at any cost"

american craftsman windows

Overall

These windows are junk. Home depot talked me into buying these over other windows. Nine years later I have replaced most all glass once. Now I am on my second time around. Home depot has helped very little, and now tells me these window are cheap windows. Now for me to do my house over again the cost is going to be high. Anyone doing an older home over BUY a name brand window. Then your cost will only be one time. And buy from your local dealer and leave the BIG BOX stores out of your place to shop. Service down the road is much better from your local dealer than some big dealer who does not care what happens after the sale.

is the window open or shut

Overall
Rated 1 out of 5

i custom ordered 9 windows american craftsman 3900 double hung windows. so much air comes thought the window it feels like it is open. the channel that the lower window moves up and down in is not sealed at all and wind blows right in, does not seal... very drafty. windows provide no sound barrier my 35 year old windows did much better with sound.

i also installed two american craftsman gliding windows bought at home depot (not special order) guess what...same problem drafty and no sound barrier.

as if that was not enough i also installed a american craftsman slider 6' bought at home depot (not special order) and yes it has the same problem... drafty and no sound barrier.

DO NOT BUY AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN... just leave your windows and doors open instead it is cheaper.

i am going to contact customer service and see if they will fix... i will let you know what happens.

American Craftsman - Think Ford '70s car quality - LOUSY

Overall
Rated 1 out of 5

I bought 4 to install, the 8700 impact resistant series. It's bad enough that the idiot at Home Depot assumed I mismeasured and ordered the closest "standard" size, but the window frames were cracked in the corners, poorly designed and next to impossible to shim! So here I am, with windows that leave 1/2" gaps or larger on every side and frames that are U shaped and don't allow for sufficient shimming.

The trim system is a nightmare as well. If you have to cut the trim length-wise add a LOT of extra time to the installation process and if you find an efficient way to do it... please let us know!!

You couldn't pay me to buy these or recommend them. I have bought and installed the comperable model from Lowes, and it was a perfect fit and easy install.

Special Order AC Windows are the best Performance per Value

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

I see there is reviews on the cheap American Craftsman Windows that are bought at the Home Depot Store.  I would never buy the ones in the store.  They are the lowest quality windows of American Craftsman.  In my rentals I special order the higher end American Craftsman windows. They have the best quality per value that is tested by renters.  Renters are the hardest on property since they usually do not respect the property.  These windows have been tried and true without any problems.  I have personally installed each of these windows and have a stake in actually installing the windows correctly and above spec.  If you do that with these higher end American Craftsman windows these will meet and exceed your expectations.

If you are looking for an excellent window then special order the higher end American Craftsman Windows.

Special order American crapsman

Overall
Rated 1 out of 5

If I could choose NO stars, I would. We custom ordered 18 of these through Home Depot, in 2000. Their top end, argon filled, all the bells and whistles except for the interior stiles. They came in wrong with 2 broken, the counter balance was not strong enough for the weight of the glass. There is no place to lift the window other than the top jamb, and the vinyl is so poor, it bows enough to slip a knife in over the glass. Eleven years later, 14 of them have the seal broken on the top (fixed) panel and are now clouded with mold begining or totally growing in them (like a petri dish). It is worse than looking through milk glass. At least 3 of the bottoms are going the same route. Home D...

Don't buy

Overall
Rated 1 out of 5

The windows are junk. We bought 7 windows out of 30 needed for a remodel and six were broke. Welds broke and sash locks were missing or broke. These are the biggest piece of junk I have encountered. When the rep came to town he left without even looking at the junk. Poor window and poor warranty and very poor mangement at the plant.

American Craftsman Windows GARBAGE

Overall
Rated 1 out of 5

American Craftsman windows are absolute garbage. Andersen should be ashamed to own this company. Windows ordered were scratched; filament inside the glass is peeling; after installation they are drafty and now the screens - warranteed for 6 mos.WOW  -  are disintegrating. I put in 32 of these puppies. Neither Andersen, Home Depot nor American Craftsman offered help!!!!

Glass cracks in the winter. Company doesn't stand behind product

Overall
Rated 1 out of 5

Fall 2009 we installed 9 twin casement windows to enclose our porch. During the 1st winter 4 of the glass panes failed. The company replaced them in spring2010. Following winter 3 panes failed. After much arguing the company replaced the glass inserts in Spring 2011but we had to install them . Winter 2011-12 another repeat of the cracking glass problem. Company service office was obnoxious & stated that it was our faulty since the windows were mounted in an unheated porch! Absurd!! Complaining to Home Depot did not help. Never recommend this product Perpetual problems
