American Airlines Review Summary

Thinking about flying American Airlines? Budget conscious travelers enjoyed the fact that some American Airlines tickets were cheap. Frequent flyers also were appreciative of the extra leg room that American Airlines affords their customers. Those expecting good and fair service were disappointed by the lack of free snacks and no entertainment "even on long flights" Some reviewers complained of rude customer service as well. I take at least a dozen trips a year and prefer American to all other airlines for the simple reason that they have always gotten me home, one way or another.  I like that.

They make sure that I get to my destination.  If they are having problems, they get me on another plane.  I appreciate this tremendously. ...

On my two most recent trips I have flown American Airlines. During that time I observed a few changes. At first I didnt think they were a big deal, but when you add them all up, they seem pretty significant.

The bottom line is that American Airlines has made a bunch of service changes to help improve...

American Airlines announced today that they will begin charging passengers to check EVEN ONE SINGLE BAG!

Outrageous?

You bet!!!

An unacceptable plummet in service in an industry already plagued by discontent? No doubt.

I don't care how many cities they serve (a lot), how reliable their service may be (it's not), or how comfortable their seats are (they aren't). When it comes to the backs of camels, at some point, customers have to say, "Enough!!!"

That last straw should come well before an airline charges to bring *ONE* suitcase. After all, travel is all about going places. Usually for more than one...

To the Point

My husband and I recently flew from Boston to San Francisco from San Francisco to Los Angeles and from San Juan to New Yor City. We have flown on American Airlines many times. We once had a terrible flight - the landing gear wasn't working. As you see it all worked out alright but I thought the staff should have been at the gate to comfort those of us who were a tad scared when the pilot said to take a crash position. However in general we've had good flights but it's not a perfect airline for sure.

A Closer View

I've been on all sorts of planes. I, like everyone who isn't sitting in...

The first time we flew out to Vegas, we took Southwest and Continental Airlines.  I am an extreme budget vacationer and research months in advance for the best price on our vacation.  This last time we went  we took American Airlines because they happened to have a better price at the time than any of the others.  Our flight out was fine, we stayed for 5 days and arrived at the airport at 10:30 pm for our flight at 1:30 am.  We went to check in on the computer and it would not let me check in, it only ordered me to see attendant.  So I went up to the desk to find out how to check in, and...

On February 3,2008 I flew American Airlines from Delhi to Chicago. I woke up with about 6 hours left in a 15 hour flight. My reading light did not work, neither did the call button. My seatmate put on his which was ignored by several attendants for more than 10 minutes. Eventually someone came serving tea. She said that she did not have a bulb and could not give me a flashlight by which to read in the darkend cabin. Later she told me I could move to a seat several rows back which had a functioning light. When I sat down there the stench of vomit was overwhelming. I read with my head in the aisle...

Flying American is usually from a need, not an airline specific choice.  I have about a 50-50 enjoyable flight experience ratio when flying American.  I know their big, go a lot of places, and have reasonable connections, particularly to South America, but if a bag is going to get lost, or a gate agent is going to have a bad day, it's usually on an American flight.

That being said, I still fly them a fair amount because they fly everywhere, and they, with all of their faults, are a lot better than some of the others out there.  I guess the key with AA is not to expect the glamorous flying...

My sister's vacation was planned for a month ago. Her 8 month old got sick and had to be taken to the hospital the day before her American Airlines flight was scheduled to depart. She canceled that flight and re-booked for the following month. They charged her a $150.00 fee which they would not waive, because it wasn't her in the hospital.

She boarded the plane on Thursday with one carry-on bag. She was told there wasn't enough room in the overhead. Though she argued, they would not let her on the plane with the bag and forced her to check it. The plane ended up not taking off. Everyone was removed...

Two years back, I took a personal trip to India on American Airlines ticket. During my  return flight, the domestic partner carrier for the leg, Air Sahara, had a "technical problem" and cancelled the flight on 24th April 2004 between Calcutta and Delhi. As I was supposed to fly to Chicago via Delhi and the following flight from Delhi to Chicago was not till next evening, American Airlines agent promised me full refund of cancelled domestic sector ticket as they "couldn't" book me on a different carrier which was  operating the same route that evening. Since I had to come back to  Chicago as... read full review »

I have always been treated with kindness and respect.  I have used American for the past 11 years.  When I have been booked on other airlines I notice the difference. Leg room is the best all around the best...

I also like seeing the pilot.  He actually greets me on my arrival...

There was one flight attendant on the SEA-DFW flight @ 4:55 PDT, she's tall with short blonde hair. Not young, maybe mid-to-late 40s. I never caught her name because she kept her name tag turned around. She was the most abrasive, sarcastic, rude flight attendant it has ever been my displeasure to deal with. She berated this poor Chinese couple with an infant. The couple could not speak English and she must have thought the ruder she became, the more understandable she would be. She was terrible, the whole flight. I complained to AA about her, and I got some pat response about how they are sorry... read full review »

I am reviewing American Airlines ..... On a recent military business flight, my husband was scheduled both to and from Reno, NV out of Killeen, TX (Fort Hood), on American Airlines. At both locations his flights were cancelled and he had to scramble for his own flights on another airline. He was to have left Reno at 2pm but was forced to stay an extra night. American put him up in Reno when they cancelled his homebound flight but they did not accomodate on a returning flight. Instead, he and others had to reschedule via Delta each way.

American Airlines really has to do something about their ticket agents. For the most part they are unwilling to help, and not very friendly. Something as simple as getting a boarding pass turned into a nightmare one Saturday morning at Orlando Intl. they place the blame on everyone else when they are the real problem, which resulted in the ramp supervisor yelling and pointing her finger in my face (she's lucky to still have that finger) my advice if you don't have to don't fly with AA.

In the last year I have flown American Airlines religiously.  My husband was stationed in Texas and then off to Iraq and then finally back.  So my visits to him were done on American Airlines.

I never really noticed a problem with service or care until the pillow/blankets were missing from the small American Eagle planes.  I am a scaredy cat and find that sleeping gets me through the flights.  I of course didn't sleep this one time.  I started to carry my own pillow but now I also needed to carry a blanket.

This seems really trivial until you realize that now that you are going to pay...

We recently traveled to Europe on American Airlines and words can not fully express the fiasco we endured and their blatant apathy and despicable customer care before, during and after our flight. Following is an excerpt from one of three letters I composed which were answered with lame excuses followed by a telephone call by a customer service representative who tried at every turn to blame us for our trouble and hung up on me when I told her she should be ashamed of herself and the company she represents.

"In January of 2009 I booked a roundtrip flight with American Airlines for myself and my...
