American Airlines —

To the Point

My husband and I recently flew from Boston to San Francisco from San Francisco to Los Angeles and from San Juan to New Yor City. We have flown on American Airlines many times. We once had a terrible flight - the landing gear wasn't working. As you see it all worked out alright but I thought the staff should have been at the gate to comfort those of us who were a tad scared when the pilot said to take a crash position. However in general we've had good flights but it's not a perfect airline for sure.

A Closer View

I've been on all sorts of planes. I, like everyone who isn't sitting in first or business class, like the 767 with two aisles. We flew on that on the way to CA and on a smaller plane coming home. I felt as if the plane could have been cleaner. Looking around I saw crumbs and papers.

The plane was not on time. It wasn't horribly late leaving but perhaps 25 minutes which the pilot was able to make up in the air.

The bathrooms were about average. Thinking back to past flights perhaps several years ago I remember thinking the service was better and the plane cleaner. The seats were comfortable. I liked the leatherette head rests on the big plane though when they were last cleaned is anyone's guess.

I didn't find any of the flight attendants to be friendly. We found blankets on our seats on the larger plane but on the smaller plane we weren't even asked if we wanted one.

I was surprised that we had to pay for snacks. In the past and on other lines (Delta) we are given a choice of some nice treats - crackers and cheese, granola bars. The price of the chips, etc. was $3.00. The positive is that their food is less expensive than in the airport ($5.00 for a decent salad). Again I was shocked on the way home that there was no bottled water. If you wanted water it was from the tap (no way) or get something else. In the past I remember getting Evian!

We saw decent movies both ways though unlike other flights I've been on there was no screen on the back of the seat in front of me on which to play. This was true on the larger plane as well. The seats are not tighter than on lines like Delta and in fact may be a tad roomier.

We use frequent flyer miles which is why we fly American when we have enough miles. American isn't my first choice and one thing I really dislike about it is their caste system. They have more classes than the elementary school across the street - from 1st to gold to green - well you get the picture. By the time they get to us I feel like I should be cleaning the toilet (not that there is anything wrong with that job)!

It's ok

well if I were there they would have had to have clean clothes! I love to fly but am scared that something might happen, that would have made me very ill ;) wow $100 bucks ! lol Not gonna keep me from flying, though. I always say your not going until your numbers up and you can't determine when it will be. Ron

Ron, I'm really not telling the whole story - the pilot got on and told us to take off our glasses and shoes if we were wearing any kind of heel; they went over the chute procedure - ya it was kind of bad! But the pilot was amazing. We were given a long runway and though it takes practice to slow down when you are flying low he managed to do that so we could land. There were ambulances and fire engines just in case. I think we got $100 each for the inconvenience! lol - Jo
