Amelie —

*Heavily-Dreamy (HD) Life Series*

About the movie:

Amelie is one of those works of art that you wonder how you ever could have lived without.  It's simply stunning, every component of the movie is art, from the wonderful narrative to the amazing music by Yann Tiersen.  How could anyone not completely and totally fall in love with this movie?  To see Amelie in her world is truly to learn how to flirt (i.e. play, have fun with, and pay so much attention to) life.  The plot description given by http://www.imdb.com/ is perfect: "Amelie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love."

  • Release Date: 2001
  • Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet
  • Runtime: 122 minutes
  • Starring: Audrey Tautou

Quote about the movie:

"This is the Paris -- and the mad, beautiful young Parisienne -- we look for in dreams. "

--Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

Quote from the movie:

"On September 3rd 1973, at 6:28pm and 32 seconds, a bluebottle fly capable of 14,670 wing beats a minute landed on Rue St Vincent, Montmartre. At the same moment, on a restaurant terrace nearby, the wind magically made two glasses dance unseen on a tablecloth."

I enjoyed this movie and your review has merit. However, it would be a better review if it had more of your opinions and fewer opinions by others. I can read the opinions of others elsewhere, but can only read your opinions here. I hope you flesh this out with more of your thoughts on "Amelie."

I really hope I get to take you up on that offer! I haven't traveled out of the U.S. in about 2 years and I'm starting to get the travel itch I think! Next summer I'm going to the Carribean with my husband (husband-to-be, actually, it'll be our honeymoon), but after that I hope to set a date for another adventure :-)

Hmmm... honestly I have not yet seen any graveyards with windows. But I have seen many windowless churches! Especially in the old Gothic Quarter where there are several ancient Cathedrals. If you do plan a trip to Barcelona just let me know and I'll give ya some more insider tips. I also have a great, trusted friend here who would be happy to help if you ever needed anything. It's always good to have local person to help save you from tourist mishaps!

I've never seen The DaVinci Code, actually. It's good to know that Tautou's brilliance extends beyond Amelie--I will have to check it out. Thanks!

Thanks, Lesli! I've never had the fortune to be in Paris, but maybe one day! Until then I will have to satisfy myself with movies like Amelie ;-)

I love Amelie. The first time I saw it was in my college French 102 class. Audrey Tautou has such a subtle brilliance, and I also enjoyed her in The DaVinci Code.

I love this review! Paris is a beautiful city and since I won't be re-visiting in the near future, a movie may be a good alternative! I am definately going to put it on my "to see" list.

In response to Meredith's comment from Nov 22, 2007 at 3:24AM:

Haha--too funny; I did go to college with a Meredith, but not a Meredith Stiles I'm afraid! Thanks for the complement on my reviews, too! It means a lot from someone whose reviews are so spectacular! (Did I mention I totally want to go to Barcelona? Which reminds me, I've always wondered: is it true, like in the Jewel song, that in Barcelona "the churches don't have windows, but the graveyards do"???

:-) yeah, I guess it's not for everyone, but I certainly think it's amazing enough for everyone to give it a chance (or two or three!)

I started to watch this once. Maybe I'll have to try again. :>

Oui Oui! I love this movie! I am totally enjoying all your reviews in fact... they are really insightful and offer details we all need as consumers/review readers! Thanks so much aprilefisher! (P.S. I went to college with an April Fisher:) If you know a Meredith Stiles than something wacky is going on!)

I agree this is a gem of a movie. Another movie that you may enjoy made by the same director is Delicatessen. Though be forewarned that it is a darker movie than Amelie.
