For months after Amazon released the Kindle, I haunted the site endlessly, dreaming of having one for my very own. Having been an avid reader since childhood, the idea of carrying a stack of books in a small device was enticing indeed.
In September of 2008, my husband, probably tired of listening to me ramble on and on about the Kindle, handed me his credit card and asked me to please go ahead and order it. Three days later, it was mine!
The Kindle is a truly amazing device. It holds hundreds of books, yet fits in the side pocket of my purse. I am never without a nice selection of books to read, and the Kindle even has newspapers and magazines available for wireless download. (Reader's Digest is my favorite) You can either turn on Whispernet and wirelessly download books from Amazon.com, or connect it to your computer and transfer the books. If you are reading a book, and have to stop for a bit, the Kindle goes into screensaver mode, and when you come back, you hit two little buttons, and you are right back to the page you were reading- no more problems with losing your place!
Along with the books you can buy from Amazon.com (most for less than $10), there are quite a few sites that have free books you can dowload. There are thousands of reviews on Amazon for the Kindle, and discussion groups where other Kindle owners are happy to answer your questions. Yes, the Kindle is a bit pricey, but in the 8 months I have owned mine, it has more than paid for itself in pure reading enjoyment!
