Amazing Grace Review Summary
Want to watch a 19th century period piece with “witty dialogue”, and “intense yet tender character development” and a poignient and historic take on social issues? Our reviewers think that Amazing Grace may fit the bill. “The screen shots are incredible, as well as the costumes and overall ‘feel’ of the time period” says one impressed reviewer. Set in Great Britain, this movie tells the tale of William Wilberforce and his efforts to abolish British slavery. “His minister was John Newton who penned the famous hymn, Amazing Grace” explains one reviewer, and he’s “haunted with his own ‘ghosts’ of the slaves he traded” before finding salvation. Our reviewers think that this historic movie is worth your while, especially if you’re interested in social issues.
comedy fan, clean movie fan, an avid reader, wife, mother & grandmother
My husband gave me a DVD of this movie as a Christmas gift because the night we went to the theater to view it, they were doing some screen repairs and we were unable to see it then. This was an enjoyable movie to me as there seems to be such a lack of "clean" movies to watch nowdays. This is based on the true story of the many-years struggle of William Wilberforce to abolish British slavery. His minister was John Newton who penned the famous hymn, Amazing Grace. Newton was haunted with his own "ghosts" of the slaves he traded before finding the amazing…

character-lover, into movies that tell a great story
"Amazing Grace" is an exceptional film that chronicles the amazing true story of William Wilberforce, the man who spent twenty years in the British Parliament fighting to end one of mankind's greatest injustices: the slave trade. The film features powerful performances by an outstanding cast, including Ioan Gruffudd ("Fantastic Four," "King Arthur," TV's "Horatio Hornblower") as Wilberforce, whose faith and courage drove his fight for social justice. Albert Finney gives an amazing performance as John Newton, the former slave-ship captain turned pastor, and writer of the beloved hymn "Amazing…

Lover of quirky, unique films
Amazing Grace tells the story of an extraordinary man who follows his convictions despite many setbacks and a physical disability. It's a story about standing up for what you believe. A dynamic politician, William Wilberforce worked for over 15 years to have the slave trade outlawed in England. Along the way, he had many doubts about what he should do with his life, and he found inspiration in a group of abolitionists (& colorful characters in their own right) who also worked tirelessly for the cause. One of Wilberforce's mentors was a former slave ship…

a movie buff, an infrequent movie goer, waiting for the DVD, a Christian
This was one of the most unadvertised, but most wonderful movies I have seen in a long while. If you do the research on the song "Amazing Grace" and then watch this movie. Well, it will mean so much more to you. Gone are the days of a GREAT story in a movie, not surrounded by cars blown up, nudity, and foul language. This is a throwback to what it is like to have just a good script and good actors to bring it about. It is also so woderful to see something that does , as one reviewer put it, "stirs the soul". Hollywood has thrown us in the abyss with what…

impressed with this product
This movie was so inspiring -- we went and looked up some more history on William Wilberforce and the abolition of slavery. Except for a few curse words when viewing the slave ships and some others, this was very family friendly. It had no undue violence and it even had some romance without the usual sexual scenes / innuendo. A good movie for families with older children, and anyone who wants to see what even just one person can do if God has called him to…

a movie buff
Usually a movie about history messes up because they get it wrong and when they get it right it is boring. This movie did not mess up. It is spot on with the history and it is any thing but boring. The casting is superb and the acting is awesome. The movie moves at a good clip and has a little bit of erverything in it. The mix of morals vx evil was good. If you like history and love politics you must see this…

into movies that tell a great story, impressed with this product, Every day computer user, health conscious, follower of Jesus Christ
This was one of my favorite movies. It's realistic and down-to-earth, insightful but not overly preachy, and there are some really funny and sweet moments. It's also very poignant. If you know anything about the history of slavery in Britain (or don't) and if you're interested in social issues and thoughts that matter, this is a great…
