My husband and I both were anxiously awaiting the DVD release of Alvin and the Chipmonks. We both grew up watching the cartoons and loved them, so this movie was sure to bring back lots of old memories. It was very entertaining but for a movie of a children's theme, it was a bit too much. Read on...

Alvin & The Chipmonks

Alvin & The Chipmonks, a 2007 movie release was a movie that adults and kids alike were anxiiously waiting to see. The trailers and commercials all promised a great movie that was typical chipmonk style of humor.

This movie follows the original plot of the chipmonks hooking up with Dave, a songwriter, who has been struggling to make a living. The chipmonks make their way to Dave's home and he befriends them. He allows them to stay inside until the chipmonks have a little party and turn the place upside down. Dave throws them outside where they make the most of the situation. They hang onto the windowsill and try to get Dave's attention. This finally worked as the chipmonks started singing. Dave was impressed and brought the little guys back inside to talk business.

Alvin & The Chipmonks is directed by Tim Hill and stars Jason Lee as Dave Seville, a struggling songwriter. I thought he played the part pretty well, although I have heard others say they thought he was awful in the role. Another main character in the movie is David Cross as Ian Hawke, who worked for the record company Dave was submitting his songs to. This part was cast very well, as Cross was excellent in this role as a crooked businessman.

Now, for the other stars of the show..the Chipmonks! The animated characters were great and voices were portrayed very realistically by Justin Long (Alvin), Matthew Gray Gubler (Simon) and Jesse McCartney (Theodore).

My Thoughts

Although I thought this movie was good overall, I was disappointed in a few things since this movie should have been a movie for kids. The romance between Dave and his neighbor is just not needed. Was this thrown in for adult appeal to the movie? I was also dissapointed in the mildly crude humor in some places of the movie. Alvin & The Chipmonks had a fair share of good laughs without having to introduce children to these jokes that were over thier heads. This is why the movie was rated PG-13 and not G.

I would recommend Alvin & The Chipmonks to adults and kids age 10-12 and up. It's a funny movie and worth watching once for an entertaining evening.  It wasn't outstanding as I originally thought it would be, but still a funny movie.  I would give it 3.5 stars if there were half stars available.

Maybe they put in more adult jokes b/c they know most people who loved Alvin back in the day are now adults :) Thanks for the review!

My 3-year old would dispute your age recommendations. He thinks this is the cinematic masterpiece of the century!!

Sounds like it might be a cute movie, one that my grandkids would enjoy, especially the 12 and 14 year olds. Not my cup of tea but I would watch it with them, who knows I just may like it too!

I wondered why it was rated PG. The commercials all make it look like a great movie for kids. Oh well---that's the way the world turns these days!

Yep, takes the fun away from being a kid again--if only for the time the movie is on...hehe.

Good points. I hate when they mess with a perfectly good idea by remaking it. ;>

I agree with you the movie should have been more like the original which was for the young ones. I still want to see it but am disappointed they added the adult theme to it. ;) Ron
