Before being a full time mom, I worked for State Farm for 10 years.  I have had both State Farm and Allstate insurance for car and auto throughout the years.......but with Allstate the most.  Currently, we have auto and home with Allstate and life insurance with State Farm.  Our agent with Allstate is much better than our agent with State Farm.  Lee Biel makes it a habit to call us personally at least once a year to do a "family check up" - but we both now it is a ploy to sell me something else - but the point is, he calls himself.  State Farm (the ones that I have had) doesn't seem to have time to call me personally once a year-at least not the agent himself....the staff, maybe, but there is something different about "the man" in charge calling you personally.  LUCKILY, we have not had to put in a claim for either auto or home in the past five years or more, so the only claim story I would be able to tell you about Allstate (auto) would be that my parents were in a bad wreck a few years back, totalled the car, had small injuries and Allstate was very good with them and pretty quickly settled the claim and my dad got another new car - he had only had the one he wrecked for a month!  So far, per my mom, their rates have not gone up.  Now, listen, this was the first accident they had had in many, many years - possibly like 10 or more, so if you have had accidents or tickets, your rates will go up - not just with Allstate, with anyone; that is just the "game" they play to get more money.

All in all, ALLstate is great.  I have no complaints.  They are the cheapest for us, the cheapest "good" company.  Don't go with a company that has a lower rating the AA....never, they just aren't good.....financially stable!!  That is what you want.  Put your house deductible at $1000 and only file big claims (fire, tornado/wind damage, etc)

I hear ya - The first thing I would do, even now - is find out who the insurance commissioner is for that state and complain & they should get on it for sure - that should not be happening. I'm in GA where many tornados come thru as well - and I have been impressed with the action the insurance commisioner can get. My parents had a bit of ho-humming with the car wreck - but as soon as they figured out I was an insurance agent AND I had called my insurance commissioner to report them - all of the sudden a fire was lit under their butt! It happens - even with other insurance companies too. It is up to the consumer to be well informed and major kudos for your parents having the policy so they can point and say, no way - look here - be sure what you signed up for! Good luck with all that!!

I would disagree. My parents just lost everything in a tornado. It took a week for the adjusters to come - meanwhile my parents were not allowed to touch anything so whatever might have been saved was ruined by the elements and mold. (Neighbor's insurance companies where there within days.) It's been over a month and my parents still have not been paid. The agent told my parents many things that never came true - like they are entitled to rent for a year when the company says oh no that's capped at $300. Also, Allstate was shocked and likely dismayed to find that my parents still had copies of their policies. Allstate tried to undercut them and tag them with a previous policy that was worth thousands less. Very important to keep copies of your policies in different places and not trust the insurance company. I'm shocked by their treatment of my parents and will never use them. I guess the moral is they are a good company - as long as you pay and never file any claims.
