To the Point

So there I was complaining once again to any one who would listen about the trouble I'm having losing weight. (Ok all of you under 50 who say it will never happen to you - just wait!) This time I was complaining to my Primary Care Physician who much to my amazement said that there was a new product on the market called Ally (He didn't know how to spell it since it's Alli.) I was shocked that

1. He recommended a diet pill.

2. It was over the counter and he said it was safe. Actually he said it was what Xenical was but at 1/2 the dose. Just a note that if I could have gotten a prescription it wouldn't have cost me as much money.

Needless to say on the way home I stopped at CVS and paid $60 for the Starter Kit.

A Closer View

So many people reading this have tried diets. Especially if you've done Weight Watchers let me save you some money and tell you that you don't need the starter kit. For the price you can buy the 120 capsule bottle rather than the 90 capsule bottle. What you get in the kit are the following: a non-necessary but cute pill holder that holds 3 pills and not very easily. You also get some plastic things you can put on a key chain and carry around with you in case you forget to avoid gravy; a Hi guide; a Read Me First guide; you get a Companion guide - how to make the Alli Program work for you; a Daily Journal; a Calorie and Fat Counter; and a Healthy Eating Guide.

How Alli works

You can read everything you every wanted to know about Alli at www.myalli.com.
You'll be told that this is an "innovative weight loss program that works with you, not for you." You'll be told that Alli can help you lose "50% more weight than dieting alone." However wherever you turn you will be told that you have to eat healthy and exercise.

Alli works in the digestive system; doesn't raise blood pressure or seem to have any contraindications unless you are pregnant, breast feeding, have had an organ transplant or are not overweight. Obviously you will talk with your doctor first. Now some may say it didn't work for me because I'm not overweight but I still think that it should have done something in 6 weeks

Each pill contains 60mg of Orlistat as well as Microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycollate, sodium lauryl sulphate, (SLS!!) povidone and talc. Each shell contains gelatine and titanium dioxide.

How to take it

You can take up to 3 capsules a day. I never took more than 2 in one day and they should be with a meal containing fat. If you are sitting down to skinless chicken, green beans and a yam you wouldn't take it.

It is the only FDA approved over-the- counter weight-loss aid for overweight adults. The way it works is to bind to gastric and pancreatic lipases blocking absorption of 25% of consumed fat - in other words undigested fat is excreted from the body instead of being turned into fat. So you may see some, what they call, treatment affects of Alli and I did but they were only occasionally unpleasant.

My thoughts

I believe that there is more of a psychological aspect to Alli than anything else. Don't get me wrong, I do know that if I eat a lot of fat I will be in the bathroom but it's not really clear why that's different than a laxative except that I do understand they work differently.

I think when you are spending perhaps $60 a month you may think twice about having the steak with mashed potatoes. I also think that it is human nature to start exercising when you start a diet program. How long that continues is something I haven't researched recently but making an educated guess I will say not long. I'm not making a judgment; I'm just observing. I also firmly believe that if any one diet or pill worked then there wouldn't be hundreds of them on the market and in the bookstores. There would be one. I'll certainly finish the bottle rather than throwing them away and will admit that I'll be trying something else.

Jo's Viewpoint
It's not working!

P.S. If I weren't going on a two week cruise (can you say buffet?) I wouldn't be sounding so desperate.

I like Alli. Helps keep constipated people like me regular :) As far as losing weight. Rule of thumb.....eat less move more. Or at least eat in monderation and still move more. I don't go to any gym or do any work outs. I just clean a 2 story house every day with yard work at least 5 times a week. That has kept me in GREAT shape. So I still eat what I want in monderation and take Alli if the fat content is too high. I am so not eating gravel and cardboard the rest of my life to be a size 2. Alli lets me have my cheesburger ONCE and a while and not worry that it will sit in my gut for 2 days. I do eat my fruits and veggies but i also have my candy bar too. You CAN lose weight with or with out Alli. I like it because it helps to keep my constant constipation away. And YEA I have had moments of OMG I need a toilet. But it didn't take long to learn not to eat that food again.

I have been taking Alli for almost 2 months and it is working great. I currently am taking it along with Phentermine and I exercise about 5 days a week for about 1 1/2 hours or more. Before taking the Alli my weight was coming off very slowly but since I started I have noticed more weight coming off. It really is working for me. I don't really watch what I eat but I try to eat healthy. I know that if I overeat then I will just see more oil in the toilet. I think this is a great tool to help me lose weight. I definately recommend this product to all my friends who are trying to lose weight.

Personally, I think you have to try things. Everybody is different and you never really know what will work for you until you try it. I've been trying to lose 5 -10 pounds for months, years. Exercise & dieting did not work. When I tried Alli faithfully with no cheating I started losing right away. If you have a goal you really want to reach give it a try. I'm glad I did.

I decided to try alli before beginning my exercise program, thinking if I lose 5 pounds before I erturn to running, I will be less likely to injure myself. I used it for a about 2 weeks, changing nothing about my diet and gained about 4 pounds. When I went off it my weight stayed the same...went back on it thinking it must have been a fluke and gained 3 pounds in less than a week. Obviously for some people alli is not going to work as expected. My money is wasted and my waist is bigger after trying it.

thank you for the review. I have been contemplating buying Alli, but now have my doubts. It did sound too good to be true. I appreciate the detailed info, like the contents of the pills, and also about the side effects. I suppose eating right and exercise is the only way to go.

In response to drterrynd's comment from Nov 21, 2007 at 11:51PM:

That is so true; however, in my case I take an army of supplements a day! Jo

Also, consider that if you are not absorbing the fat from the foods you eat (because it literally slides right through you), you are also not able to absorb the NECESSARY fats our body needs -- Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).

I tried this briefly as well, still need to go back and finish the rest, I didn't notice any difference either, nor did I have any of the affects that they described. I kept waiting for the bad experience but it never happened, a little gas, but that was about it. I will probably finish the bottle but for the price I don't think I will be buying it again.

Wow - that is disheartening, Jo. Hope you find what works! :>
