I was compelled to amend the following review after a recent visit and based upon other's most recent visits.

I'm not sure what has happened to Allan's.  It is still owned and operated by the same people; same cooks, same waitress', but wow, the quality just deteriorated to zilch!

We went a couple of weeks ago based on friends recent visits and their complaints.  Could it be?  We needed to see for ourselves.

The food was all around horrible.  I ordered flounder which had a funky taste; my husband ordered the broiled platter which has been scaled back, which isn't so bad, but he also said his had a weird flavor.  Couldn't quite place it...to tell you the truth....I don't want to know.

The wait staff, which used to be enjoyable to be around, was just cranky...flat out nasty.  What's going on here?

The place was never known for it's cleanliness, but just looked really dirty....the tables, floors and bathroom.  Can't imagine the kitchen!

There are way too many other really good local restaurants in this area that care about their customers to go to.  I would NOT recommend Allan's as they just don't seem to care anymore.

***************************************************************************************************************

There is nothing fancy about Allen's.  Including the menu.  It is your placemat.  All of the items are listed on your paper placemat.

Now on the flip side, Allen's serves up some of the very best seafood dishes I have ever had, with low prices.  My absolute favorite are their Crab Cakes.  They are stuffed with huge pieces of jumbo crab, not little flakes.  They make the most unique (and one of their specialties) Fried Lobster.  They serve Chowders and Soups in bowls that could probably feed three or four people.  It is not the size that counts though, it is the quality; and they are terrific.

From the flounder, to the seafood platter, to the crab legs, there is nothing at Allen's that isn't prepared to perfection.  On the no frills side, each dish is served with a choice of cole, slaw, french fries, apple sauce and a couple of others.

When your plate arrives, don't be shocked....the plates are styrofoam.  I told you this is a no frills place!  At least your cup is plastic and fork and knife steel.

Allen's is BYOB.  Don't worry, there is a liquor store with a great wine selection directly across the street.

Depending on what you order; for example, the flounder or cod, with tax and tip the price will be around $15.00.  The lobster, crab cakes and a few other items are a little more pricey.

If in the South Jersey area....definitely stop at this place!

As a follow up....we went last weekend and it was horrible! I mean really bad. I'm not the only one saying it either. We went based upon a friends recent visit and had to see for ourselves. Never again....I need to amend my review.

Hahahaha...that's what most people say...if you blink an eye you miss it. It is approximately 30 miles north of Atlantic City and about 100 miles south of New York. It's actually very beautiful down here. You have the water on one side of the road and on the other the forest...it's kind of cool....not anything like your neck of the woods though. There's only about 1300 people living here.

The only place I've ever been in NJ is the Newark Airport, and the road from there to NY. And back. Your article makes NJ sound like a pretty cool rustic vacation spot. Being a current NW resident, seafood, good seafood is a passion. Where the hell is New Gretna?
