Alice Sebold and Alyssa Bresnahan - The Lovely Bones: A Novel Review Summary

For a novel with a sad and unique perspective, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold fills the bill. It is the story of 14-year old Susie Salmon who, taking a short cut home from school one day, is kidnapped, raped and brutally murdered by a neighbor. She immediately flies away to her own personal heaven and it is from there she looks down and observes how the people she knew and loved respond to her death. Susie is also our narrator. Over the years, she observes various ways her death affects the lives of her family and friends, often wanting to yell at them and keep them from taking the actions they are about to embark on. The Lovely Bones , "was a good story that kept me reading even when I was tired and thinking about reading when I had other, more important things to do." It might be a tough read for mothers with teenage daughters because "To hear a child telling you the story of her own murder and the effect it had on everyone that knew her touched me beyond anything I had read before" and the premise is a tricky one and "The story takes on a somewhat voyeuristic tone as the narrator observes life on earth from her personal heaven, but it makes for some interesting stories, and makes me think twice about doing something I wouldn't want my late grandmother to see." Available in hardback and paperback.

The Verdict: The Lovely Bones was a very interesting read, but not overly deep.  I was able to finish it in just a few days as it was definitely a page turner.  I enjoyed it and recommend it.

Just the Facts:  The Lovely Bones is about 14-year-old Susie Salmon and her family.  When the story begins...

alice sebold is a great author, but i could not read this story.  i tried twice and it just didnt work.  as a mother of teenage daughters, it bothered me and i decided it was not worth it.  i believe she did not go into enough depth and emotionality of the characters.  sorry, i tried but i just didn't... read full review »

From the very first sentence in this novel I was hooked. It was truely one I just couldn't put down. Alice Sebold took such an interesting angle on telling this story. To hear a child telling you the story of her own murder and the effect it had on everyone that knew her touched me beyond anything I had read before. It is not a story that I will soon forget. I reccomend everyone read this little girl's tale. I guarentee it willput things in a new light.

I read this book as a space-filler while I was travelling and was glad for the diversion, but was left slightly unsatisfied when the story came to a close. It has an interesting premise, and is definitely gripping - I had a hard time putting it down - however, it lacks a certain level of complexity that I have come to expect from my reading material (being fresh out of undergraduate). The story takes on a somewhat voyeuristic tone as the narrator observes life on earth from her personal heaven, but it makes for some interesting stories, and makes me think twice about doing something I wouldn't... read full review »

I read this book a couple of years ago and it left an impression on me.  It was a very sad story, but still a good read.  I had a hard time putting the book down.  I especially enjoyed the main character's description of heaven and how her death affected her friends and family differently.

I wouldn't recommend this book to an individual who possess a low capacity for intense language (I mean graphic description, as profanity isn't common within this novel). However, if you are able to tolerate that sort of thing, then you'll be able to view the grand meaning of this story.

The plot possesses an explosive inception and that's probably the best thing about 'The Lovely Bones'. A traumatic experience and simultaneous death of a girl called "Susie" due to a serial rapist causes diverse grief responses in her family. However, Susie still lives and is permitted to view anybody she chooses...

This story was so touchingly tragic.  I was literally devastated for this girl, and for her whole family.  The family relations were so well entwined, that I felt like this is what would happen if this situation had been real.  Everything about this story was completely believeable.  At the end I felt relieved, yet disappointed that it was over.  I found myself praying thoughout the whole book that they would just find her body.  I had real emotions towards all the characters, including grief and anger at some of the things the family members did in order to get over such a devasating event.... read full review »

Alice Sebold's - The Lovely Bones

Typically, it takes a few months to completely finish a book, even an average sized one, this took me 4 days, to me, that's super fast! I could not put it down, it was the first book I ever read that I was so interested in and it actually inspired me to read more. I read a lot more because of this book, I figured, wow, if this book was so good, what am I missing??? Extremely unique, riveting, captivating, etc. I absolutely loved this book and I have since bought 2 more books from the author based on how good this was. I highly recommend it if you want to read a...

The story of Susie Salmon unfolds cleverly with a heavenly narrator. The character are sketches but the situation is solid. It is a murder mystery for the characters but not the readers. To the readers it is a simple story of hope, love, and fate. My mother recommended this book to me and I would now recommend it as well. I never found myself in awe of Sebold's writing but was in love with the characters. The story trancends the pages.

I purchased this book based on a suggestion from a long time friend, not knowing what the book was about.  Within the first few pages I was captivated and had the book read within a few days.  This is a very heartwarming and heart wrenching story about a little girl and her desire to bring healing to her family.  It is a tearjerker so have tissues available.  A must read for any Alice Sebold fan.

I don't even usually read novels, but I loved this book!  I couldn't put it down, and I didn't want it to end.  You really felt like you got to know the characters well.  Plus the author's take on life after death was really interesting and comforting.  It wasn't depressing, although the topic sounds depressing.  I highly recommend this book to anyone.

This is a sad book, but definitely worth the read.  A co-worker recommened it to me and I couldn't put it down.  At times I could just feel the pain of the characters - this is a very moving book.  I think this is a very unique plot, at least in terms of the viewpoint from which it is written.  I love a good mystery, and this book has that aspect as well.

I had heard this was a good book and bought it based on that alone. I hd no idea what the story was about. What a well written book. I couldn't put it down for hours at a time. It was very original, intriguing, it kept my interest. I would definately recommend this book. It is not for the romance or "pop" reader, it has a heavier subject matter.

This is a good read, Alice Sebold draws you in the Salmon's family and you experience the pain that these people are experiencing as the time goes on. There are parts that make you go "hmmm" and some that make you cringe...It shows how differently family members grieve the loss of a loved one and the journey they travel while dealing with the grief.
