One of these days, I just gotta shake the hand of the guy who started the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chain. Nobody in the history of cinema has ever put together such an outrageously FUN way to catch a movie. Alamo rocks!!

I've been to all the Alamo locations in Austin, and one that I always look forward to visiting is the Alamo Lake Creek. It's a bit of a haul if you're downtown, since it's up 183 past the Arboretum, but if you go, you'll be treated to Alamo's most modern location in Austin, plus its best beer selection. Yeah, every Alamo has great brewskis, but Lake Creek has an entire wall of taps, with about double the number of draft beers as the Alamo Downtown or Alamo Village. I like not having to sneak beers into the theatre under my coat, like I always do at AMC or Cinemark theatres. Alamo has better beer than my local grocery store, and it's all draft --- is this a GREAT theatre, or WHAT!?!?!

Like all Alamos, Lake Creek generally discourages people from bringing kids, but I like that Lake Creek does make the effort to reach out to the suburban family guy who just wants a pizza and a fine microbrewed craft beer with his movie. They've lately run a few kid-oriented movies with an "all ages, all shows" policy. Awesome! I can bring the little guys and let them eat pizza while enjoying fresh, homemade lemonade sweetened with a bit of brown sugar....awwww man, if you thought Dad was lovin' life with his tall glass of Stone Brewing's Arrogant Bastard Ale, you shoulda seen the look on the kids' faces when they tasted that lemonade. Who the hell wants to drink Coke when you've got elixirs like this!! Alamo Lake Creek also does Cryin' Baby Days (at least that's what I call 'em); usually it's Tuesdays, when stay-at-home Moms are invited to bring their little charges with them to any movie. The moms can hobnob with their friends over chilly Mimosa champagne cocktails or herbal mint teas while the little guys hobnob over lemonade or the infamous $5 milkshakes.

The pizza ain't bad either, though there's a full menu with all kinds of entrees, sandwiches, and appetizers. I like the way they spice their Alamo burgers, and with a sprinkling of bleu cheese, it is one tasty accompaniment to a great movie. One house specialty that I've really gotten addicted to is their deep fried pickels. Took me a bit of convincing to try them the first time, but ever since, I just can't keep my lips off 'em!

Like all Alamo locations, this one does special events with unusual foreign, art, or oldies film screenings, and one of their recurring events that I enjoy are their Tromatic Thursdays. I got into these when I lived in Houston and would go with my friends to the Alamo West Oaks. The way Tromatic Thursdays works is that they screen a very bizarre, total grindhouse sleaze flick every Thursday evening: admission is totally free and the movies come from the Troma collection (www.troma.com). Most of the movies are really cheesy, have terrible effects and worse dialog, and are full of grotesque gore, gratuitous sex scenes, and violence and mayhem whenever it can be fit in. It's total camp, but totally fun too. Screenings feature such titles as Poultrygeist, Dumpster Baby, Teenage Cat Girls in Heat, Surf Nazis Must Die, Cannibal! the Musical, and of course, the classic Troma flick, Toxic Avenger.

If those special events don't float your boat, rest easy. By and large, the movies are your latest Hollywood blockbuster flicks. I caught No Country for Old Men here, as well as such deep, philosophical movies as Hot Fuzz (and most recently, Horton Hears a Who). Fun entertainment your way....that's basically what Alamo is all about, and the Alamo Lake Creek does it very well. The location is about 15 minutes from downtown Austin, but if you're in the northwest side of town near the Arboretum, it's a great choice because it's big, clean, modern, has tons of free parking, has great movies, and always a fabulous lineup of exciting microbrewed beers and fine imports.
