AirTran airlines got mixed ratings from Viewpoints members. If you are looking for cheap flights, AirTran is your airline. If you are looking for good customer service, you may want to reconsider. Many budget conscious travelers report they were "pleasantly surprised by the price" and that their overall experience was “pleasant”. However, people who are very service conscious were less than enthusiastic about the baggage claim process with some complaining that it was too slow. Bad Customer Service

I recently traveled to see a family member. I selected Air Tran airlines because their rates were cheaper than any other airline, and I was on a limited budget. I went from Charlotte to Atlanta without a hitch, but when I got to Atlanta to fly to St. Louis, everything fell apart. An hour before my flight to St. Louis was scheduled to depart, I went to the gate to wait and noticed the flight screen was blank. Tons of cities, one-way flights, great fares!

Airtran lets me stay Flexible — I often need to fly to more than one city while out of town. I've only found two airlines that let me do that affordably in the USA and Airtran is one of them. Airtran also has an amazing list of cities it flies to - covering most of the country. I flew Airtran from Orlando to Detroit with a plane change in Atlanta. The entire experience from booking to the flight home was terrible and I will NEVER fly Airtran again. I booked the flight in March for travel in August for my mother and I. They changed our itinerary 3 times via email until I telephoned them not to change our itinerary again and if they did, I would cancel our flight. Flight day came and I knew the experience was going to be horrible. For lies and bad service, fly Air Tran

I refuse to fly Air Tran ever again. The last time I had a flight booked for my daughter, we got to the airport 45 minutes before the flight took off - we were told we were too late - the flight left early!!!! Now, how many times, ever, does a flight leave early? The counter people would not call the gate, would not let us through, and to add insult to injury, charged an extra $25 for the next flight. On top of that, they wouldn't let us use their counter phone to call the pasty who'd be picking her up at the other end. We travel Airtran frequently because they offer a non-stop flight to Orlando which is where we travel to alot (in-laws live there). I have never ever had a problem with them. The only time I ever had a luggage issue was with another airline (flew to Texas-luggage was a day later). I love the low prices, the good size plane, (hate those little prop-jobbers) and the dependability. I think alot of how you experience customer service is all in your approach. On my return flight from Seattle to Baltimore, I got to the counter to check in 45 minutes before the flight left due to bad weather and traffic. I had one carry on bag and no checked luggage. I was told I could not make that flight because I needed to check in 45 minutes before the flight (if they would have checked me in instead of telling me this, I would have been fine). I've been loyal to Air Tran (AT) for over 7 years of my domestic traveling experience. I've saved more money with Air Tran than any other airline and love their frequent flyer program that keeps me in the air and flying free. My husband and I traveled with Air Tran to the Bahamas for our honeymoon. He handled all of the arrangements and we were scheduled to fly out in the early afternoon. As he had never traveled internationally, we arrived to the airport very early so he would have time to comfortably learn what needed to be done. I traveled Air Tran for the first time this Christmas on Dec. 22. My luggage with all my clothes in it was left in Atlanta during a layover while I went on to LaGuardia Airport in NY. Fortunately, my other suitcase with Christmas presents arrived with me! I will never fly with them again! — They may have great prices but the worst customer service ever. — I have a 3 year old daughter and my husband is in a wheelchair. We had a 30 minute passing time between our flights and missed our plane because of them!!! The pilot said he had called ahead so they can have a wheelchair waiting for my husband when we landed. We ended up waiting 20 minutes after the plane landed! We got to our gate and missed our plane. It could have been prevented! How? On a recent trip to Washington DC, I booked our flights through AirTran as their price couldn't be beat. We flew from Milwaukee to Baltimore for $117 per person, direct flights both ways. However, before our trip, I received an email informing me that our direct flight on the return trip had been altered and we were going to have a lay over in Atlanta. So we would fly from Baltimore to Atlanta, lay over and then fly from Atlanta to Milwaukee!!! I used to fly with Delta when I first started flying back and forth to college. Then I found AirTran. For my area, AirTran was cheaper so I thought I would give it a try. Thus far, I have had no significant problems with AirTran. My luggage has never been lost; I have never been significantly delayed with a flight. I have to say that their planes are somewhat small, but you get what you pay for.
