Having taken several long haul flights over the years, I can honestly say no airline knows how to make a 12 hour flight as painless as possible as well as Air New Zealand.
Let's face it, no one is comfortable being trapped on board a plane for 12+ hours. At best, it's going to be clautrophobic, either too hot or too cold, and boring. At worst, the food will be awful, the service will be terrible and the movies will be awful. Air NZ manages to make it almost pleasant. They serve food that's actually tasty. And there's enough of it to feel satisfied. Air NZ was one of the first airlines to make individual tv screens available to each passenger, even those flying economy class, and to offer a whoel array of films and tv shows, as opposed to everyone being forced to watch the same thing.
At the endof the day, though, it's the quality of the staff that counts. I've always found Air NZ staff - from the flight attendants to the folks at the counter, to the customer service people on the phone - are professional, courteous, and friendly.
