Across the Universe 2007 Review Summary

Across the Universe 2007 is a "colorful, exuberant, flawed Beatle fantasia pop culture collage." This film uses 33 different Beatles tunes to tell the story of a man named Jude. The songs are not the original Beatles tunes, though, being sung here by the cast of Across the Universe. Reviewers feel the talent each character brought into the story was amazing, and the singing drew you in more. One caution put out by the Viewpoints reviewers is that the Across the Universe does show heavy drug use. While a musical like Hairspray is more readily available, this one is worth searching for.

I wanted to see Across the Universe from the moment I saw the first advertising for it. As a big Beatles fan, all I needed to know was that the film extensively used Lennon/McCartney and Harrison songs to tell a story. The bottom line is that I really enjoyed the film, from its straightforward romantic...

Basically the trailer for this movie is way better then the actually movie. The trailer is a good representation of what happens in the movie except for the weird inappropriate parts. I loved the fact that the movie was about the Beatles and included a lot of their songs. I have to admit that the plot... review »

Julie Taymor's  Across the Pacific  is an exuberant, imaginative, colorful, clichéd, risky collage of set pieces and moments that range from magical and inspired to trite and over-wraught.   It could hardly be any other way without sacrificing its innocence and PG !3 rating.

It's also clearly doomed to box office failure since it used 33 Beatles songs to propel its narrative forward.   Purist Beatle fans won't like the way some of the songs have been toyed with and re-imagined.   Others will not catch many of reference points the movie pays homage to.

Since the tone of the movie is...

This movie is SO beautifully made! They took 30 Beatles songs and turned them into an original, unique, moving story of a guy named Jude who comes to America from England during the 60's. This is by FAR the best movie I've seen all year!

The only negative I can think of, is that the movie does portray some heavy drug use. It doesn't really seem to glorify drugs, and it also doesn't portray them negatively. Drugs are not the main theme of the movie, but they are definitely present. Which makes sense to me, since drug use was a huge part of the 60's - it would be a little dishonest to leave that...

Across the Universe was under-rated I think.  This movie was exceptional.  We finished watching it the first time and were already ready to watch it all over again.  It was the perfect blend of music and plot.  The remakes of the songs were really great.  We listen to the soundtrack all the time and each song reminds us of the specific parts of the movie it happened in.  I think this movie was worthy of many many awards and I think it is a shame that most people are like "what is that movie?"  DuH, it's only like 500 times better than Hairspray which I think just about everyone in the continental... review »

From the moment the previews appeared the search began.

It was well worth it.  "Across the Universe" is an amazing film that grabs you from the first second and doesn't let go until the last.  A visual masterpiece, this may be the greatest use of Beatles music since "All This and WWII."

The sad part is this movie was not distributed widely enough, leaving viewers in smaller cities struggling to see what all the buzz was about.  And now that it is coming out on DVD, hopefully the MOR moguls that run on-demand channels will offer the opportunity to many to be able to watch this movie.

If anything,...

When I first saw the previews for this movie I couldn't take my eyes off the television and I knew I had to see it! I looked for weeks to see when it came out and finally my day came.

It came to one local theatre and I was there. This movie was so fun and exciting and exhilarating. It was more than I expected and then some. The characters were compelling and the music was PHENOMINAL (being Beetles songs how could it not be)

The individual talent that each character brought into the story was amazing and the singing drew you into them. Individual voices and songs that were beyond perfect for the scenarios...

Let me start by sayin this is a great movie. Even mu husband who typically hates things like this grudginly admitted it wasn't that bad. I loved watching it, it was a great movie experience. The onyl downside to me is after seeing how great Titus was (of the same director) this fell short of my expectations. I was expecting perhaps a bit more subtlety in the characters instead of being hit over the head with Joplin/Hendrix/McCartney. It was beautiful to watch, it was moving, and not being alive during that time myself, I feel the setting of the music really helped to udnerstand the music a little...

I went to see this movie not having any idea what it was, what it was about, who was in it or anything. I had no expectations. The movie is more like an indie/musical film, but I enjoyed it. The actors were great, especially the main one, Jim Sturgess. This movie defies all rules, the plot is not a perfect square as plots are in other films, it is made how it wants to be. I would give it 4 out of five stars.

This movie, and consequently the soundtrack that followed, are beautiful. I fell in love with the movie immediately, and was singing the songs for days afterward. I eagerly awaited the soundtrack, and when it came out, I anxiously snapped it up. Both were equally pleasing to the eyes and subsequently, ears.

I am not a Beatles fan, but this movie blew me away.  I love music and I have a passion for it.  It was great to finally see a movie use music as the focal point and have the images help express the songs.  It was full of emoition and love, it was a great experince.  I have since been listening to the Beatles everyday.  This movie was great and it stayed on my mind days after I watched it.  It is a must see for sure.  And the covers were great!

I totally fell in love with this movie when i saw it in theaters and couldnt wait for it to come on dvd. THe way that its just so different from every other movie that is out there really makes me lkove it more. i love how all the songs were made into a different sound from what the beetles had because perosnally when the beetles sing them they are just horrible. I love this movie!

So this movie is a musical, but I have to say its not a cheesey one! If you love the era of the Beetles than you will love this movie. The music is great and the characters are wonderful. Each song has meaning in the characters life at the time they sing. I hope everyone will take the time to watch it and see what you think. I loved it so much I bought it for my collection....

This is an awesome movie...very artistic, that's what I like and I enjoyed how they encorporated many beatles and other great songs of the 60's into the hard life story of a group of young adults trying to make it on their own!  This movie introduced me to some great music!!! It's a must see for any adult interested in music and artsy movies!!!

A musical love story - nothing new? This movie is a production of shear genious. It has an essence of surrealism and artistic, sometimes shocking photographic "delight to the sences". The producer is known for her cartoon-like productions, whereas this move uses real people and of course the topper is the use of 16 beatle's songs.
