Most HelpfulI wanted to see Across the Universe from the moment I saw the first advertising for it. As a big Beatles fan, all I needed to know was that the film extensively used Lennon/McCartney and Harrison songs to tell a story. The bottom line is that I really enjoyed the film, from its straightforward romantic...

Most HelpfulIt's also clearly doomed to box office failure since it used 33 Beatles songs to propel its narrative forward. Purist Beatle fans won't like the way some of the songs have been toyed with and re-imagined. Others will not catch many of reference points the movie pays homage to.
Since the tone of the movie is...
review »This movie is SO beautifully made! They took 30 Beatles songs and turned them into an original, unique, moving story of a guy named Jude who comes to America from England during the 60's. This is by FAR the best movie I've seen all year!
The only negative I can think of, is that the movie does portray some heavy drug use. It doesn't really seem to glorify drugs, and it also doesn't portray them negatively. Drugs are not the main theme of the movie, but they are definitely present. Which makes sense to me, since drug use was a huge part of the 60's - it would be a little dishonest to leave that...
review »When I first saw the previews for this movie I couldn't take my eyes off the television and I knew I had to see it! I looked for weeks to see when it came out and finally my day came.
It came to one local theatre and I was there. This movie was so fun and exciting and exhilarating. It was more than I expected and then some. The characters were compelling and the music was PHENOMINAL (being Beetles songs how could it not be)
The individual talent that each character brought into the story was amazing and the singing drew you into them. Individual voices and songs that were beyond perfect for the scenarios...
review »Let me start by sayin this is a great movie. Even mu husband who typically hates things like this grudginly admitted it wasn't that bad. I loved watching it, it was a great movie experience. The onyl downside to me is after seeing how great Titus was (of the same director) this fell short of my expectations. I was expecting perhaps a bit more subtlety in the characters instead of being hit over the head with Joplin/Hendrix/McCartney. It was beautiful to watch, it was moving, and not being alive during that time myself, I feel the setting of the music really helped to udnerstand the music a little...
