My wife bought The Ultimate Kitched Gardener on HSN. It is a fairly expensive (over $120) hydrophonic planter with 6 pods for growing herbs.

Well, the growth is fueled  by aerated water. The unit has an internal pump which is supposed to go off and on periodically. It wasn't continuous, it was maybe 15-20% of the time. Then, late last week, it became zero.

My wife called the customer service number and the person admitted that they had trouble with the pumps. They would issue a replacement base and seed pods but, unless we could aerate the water, the herbs would die. The person suggested blowing with a straw frequently or getting an aquarium pump. After about a day of the straw thing, I decided to go the pump route and went off to petco after surfing the net.

This unit has their smallest capacity and is for aquariums of 5 to 10 gallons. I figured that would be enough, since the water in the HSN unit is clearly less than 5 gallons and the pump wasn't going continuously.  I noticed that this was UL-listed and had a check valve to protect the pump from water backflow. This pump is meant to be placed outside the aquarium. I bought it for $8.99 plus sales tax.

I got it home and I saw that it was not ready to use. It needed the silicone pipes to go from the pump to the hydroponic unit. So, I went off to a local aquarium and got 6 feet of 3/8" silicone pipe for 15 cents a foot. I cut a small piece and connected that between the pump and the check valve, taking care to put the arrow on the valve pointing in the right direction for protection.  I put a larger piece from the othr side of the valve into the base of the Gardener. I plugged it in and off it went.

I could tell the pump was working because of bubbles arising through the water in the base unit and because of the soft but steady him of the pump.

Well, less than a week later, I know the pump is working because the herbs in the pods have been growing like weeds. Were ready to harvest half of them and the others are close. My wife is thrilled because she thought the herbs were going to die and I'm pleased at getting a new set of pods and a full set of the first group for the price of less than $11, with the piping.

So, this unit aerates well and I am delighted with it.
