One of my students showed up with an Acer Aspire, and I was amazed at how small the little netbook is compared to a full sized laptop computer. I'm not tall enough to actualy use a laptop on my lap, but the Acer looked like it might work. And, it did. The Acer Aspire fits right on my lap with room to move my elbows out and type. Yay!
Now, I have an Acer. It's red, but the red color is not fire engine. It's more a burnt red color. They have pink like in the photo as well as blue, black, and white.
Mine is the 10 inch, since they are phasing out the 9 inch. The only difference is screen size. You don't get a smaller netbook with a 9 inch. You just get a little more plastic around the edges.
The main difference with the netbooks is that they have less storage space, but I do an heavy duty computer work on my desktop computer. A netbook is not designed to hold big programs like PageMaker, but it does fine with MS Word and a few other smaller programs loaded on there. You do need a portable external hard drive to install programs, since there's no CD included due to size. An external CD drive just hooks up through the USB port - very easy.
In using the Acer Aspire netbook, the main difference I'd note is the keyboard size. It's smaller. I have very long fingers, but my fingers are slim. I adjust well to the compressed keyboard, but I'd suggest looking at netbooks at the store and seeing how the keyboard feels. The size could be too cramped espcially for men.
You can add a mouse with the USB port, but I'd suggest learning how to use the keypad. It's really not hard once you get the hang of it, and then you don't have to carry around extra gear. There's the center keypad and then the toggle bar. Use that as well as those arrow up, down, and side to side buttons on the computer, and you're set.
I use the Acer Aspire on the go for mostly online computer work like checking and editing the college newspaper which is housed online. I can also check my email and Facebook and stuff like that which I could check on the cell phone if I could read small stuff on the cell phone which I can't. So, the Acer is large enough so that I can use it and see but small enough to be portable. The Acer fits in almost all my purses, and it's just really handy to take along. I really like it a lot.
