My mom (born 1959) remembers having the opportunity to "tour" a computer when she was in grade school... and though she doesn't remember much from the experience, she DOES remember the gentleman who gave the tour declaring, "I don't know why anyone would want a computer smaller than this." At the time, the size of a computer required the space of an entire room.
What a ways we've come since then! Acer's "ASPIRE one" is one of the most compact computers you can have, if you don't count cell phones. This little guy has been perfect for what I got it for---taking back and forth with me to my job where I go from floor to floor, collecting and analyzing data. The primary programs I use are Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer, though my husband has installed and plays WarCraft on it from time to time. The computer works very well for our uses, though I do have a couple complaints.
If you accidently rest your thumb too close to the "mouse" while you're moving the mouse, it's easy to accidently zoom in or out on a webpage or document, causing you to view your work at 10x bigger or smaller than you would want it. The computer does not have enough oomph to support an electronic notetaking pen I got at about the same time as I got the computer. My husband doesn't like using it because his hands are quite big... but it's just right for me!
Overall, it does what I use it for, and sells for a great price--about $300.
