I do believe I learned to fish before I could walk! My Dad loved to fish and he passed the passion down to all 6 of us as we were growing up. I caught my first 5lb. fish when I was 6 years old right next to one of the most famous bridges in the U.S.A. Now it is place where bungee jumpers and crazy parachute fanatics love to jump off the bridge every year. I am speaking of the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia. It is the worlds 2nd largest single span bridge. I fished there before it ever went up. The old bridge was a one lane wooden bridge and I was born and grew up just 30 minutes from there!

Abu Garcia MX130R Spinning Reel

I have always preferred using an open face reel and I still have 2 1952 Mitchell reels my Dad owned that he bought in Waco Texas 4 years before I was born and one still works! These Abu Garcia (also known as Cardinal) MX130R Reels are the best reels I own and I have had both these and the MX120R. There are several features that I really love on these reels, first they can be set to reel from either side. Second the spool of the reel comes off with the push of a button so you can change reels in a few seconds. Of course setting back up to fish takes a few minutes but it is a breeze with this model of reel.

The retrieve ratio is pretty good at 5.2 to 1, which means for every revolution I make with the handle the spool spins 5.2 times. Makes catching fish real easy and gets the line back in quick! There are very few differences between this MX130R and its predecessor the MX120R. This one is more colorful and the spools are not only larger but they also come in Graphite and Aluminum where the MX120R was only Graphite.

Another difference is that this one has a hole to tie the line to on the spool and also has a Quick Cast Trigger that really saves wear and tear on your finger when you cast. They being bigger also hold more line than the older ones. I can put 175 yards of 10lb. test line on these with no problems. I can also interchange my spools between the two reels as the design is the same.

My MX130R reels (I have 3 of them) are 8 years old and my MX120R reels are 14 years old (I have 2 of them) I break down my reels every year at the end of fishing season and clean them up then oil them real good. All 5 of my Abu Garcia/Cardinal reels still work like new and have never failed me.

Bottom Line

A fisherman is only as good as the equipment he uses! If the reels don't work properly you can lose a fish and turn a good day into a nightmare. These Abu Garcia/Cardinal reels have never let me down and I can change spools in a flash. I will continue to enjoy fishing as long as the Good Lord allows me too and until then I will hopefully be using my favorite reels to fish with! Abu Garcia understands what a fisherman needs to not only catch fish but also have a worry free day. For the past 14 years I have used nothing but Abu Garcia and believe they are not only the best fresh water reels but they don't require a large wad of cash to own one.

Fun Facts on the New River Bridge

I caught a Bass just over 5lbs under what is now a very famous bridge when I was only 6 years old (save your math skills..that was in 1962) The rocks along the New River hold some of the largest Bass anywhere on the East Coast. You can also land monster Catfish from around all the large rocks that are all along this river. It used to take 45 minutes to make the trip around the skinny roads back then and now the river crossing takes all of a minute. The New River Gorge Bridge was opened to traffic in 1977 and now hosts a festival every year, where bungee jumpers and parachutists enjoy the river that I grew up with.

The steel used to construct the bridge never needs to be painted and it blends into the countryside very well with its weathered look. It also saves the highway department a lot of money since it never needs to be painted. Who would have thought that such a technologically advanced bridge would be built in the mountains that I call HOME! One side of the bridge has calm water and the other has rapids that are enjoyed by many White Water Enthusiasts every year.

I will always remember my childhood fishing under where the bridge now sits. The place where my Dad ( May he Rest in Peace)and I spent a lot of time together and made some unforgettable memories! I have included a few pictures of this Great Landmark so you can see where this old Redneck used to hang out as a kid, before he became kid-kansas!

Yes it is on the quarter. It is gorgeous and holds some deep memories too. The fishing is great there, we used to park on a dirt road and then walk down the hill to the river. ;)

I've been to that bridge... it's on the back of the WV state quarter, isn't it? Beautiful spot.

What a great review! I used to love to fish when I was a kid too but my specialty was just sitting in a boat, looking happy, waiting for something to bite on the end of my line. I don't think I ever caught more than five pounds of fish altogether but when my Dad and I shared our catch for breakfast the next day, they were delicious.
