AMICA —

Amica used to be one of the few "old fashioned" insurance companies that did business the way you mom and pop did business with their insurance agent.  Obviously size and an overinflated drive to the bottom line has changed the focus of this company dramatically.

I've had auto insurance with Amica (as well as home owners) for the past 6+ years.  The first year I had my home with Amica it was a great rate.  The next year is nearly doubled.  I had no claims - it just doubled.  The explanation from Amica was that they had "changed their rate structure".  The next year we had very high winds and I wasn't sure if I had some minor roof damage or not so I asked if someone could just take a look and let me know.  Well little did I know that "taking a look" qualified as a claim.  Again another rate increase for the "claim".  The long and short of it is that my insurance started out at about $500.00 a year and over the 6 years ended up at $1400.00

My auto has been pretty consistent over the years.  My issue with my auto insurance is that they began jacking around with their billing system so they would not get bills sent out but about once every other month or so.  By the time you got a bill, you owed 2 - 3 months of premiums and they were threatening cancellation.  Now they have jumped on the insurance credit score bandwagon and begun to re-rate everyones policy based solely on your credit score.  Accidents, tickets, driving record are a MINOR part of their new rating system.  In their new system, it's all about your credit score and as you know in the current financial market, if you are not perfect, you're going to get nailed on your rates and it will continue year after year.

Years back I recommended Amica to many of my friends because they were such a quality company.  Now - I wouldn't recommend Amica to my worst enemy. No one deserve to deal with what has become a slimy company.

My time with Amica was great until I had some finanical difficulty. Both my home and auto insurance were cancelled due to nonpayment. That was my fault I was out of job (still out of a job) and couldn't pay. However, when I tried to reinstate my Amica insurance coverage the auto coverage went from 2600 to 3700 and my home coverage went from 2400 to 5200. I asked about the increase and they said I was lucky they were willing to renew my coverage. They added that because my credit score had dropped they had to change my rate as per Amica policy. I've been a loyal Amica customer for almost 10 years but I can no longer afford their coverage. This is my first time to have financial difficulty and I've never been late with a payment until recently. Amica has chosen to make a profit out of our misfortuate.

Justthefact's knows what he's talking about. They use to never advertise...it was all word of mouth. Poor customer service and an arrogant attitude the past several years has brought on the need to advertise now...that and the drive for greedy profits when they use to be satisfied with making a good living. I made the mistake years ago of carrying medical coverage and the coverage on your auto they have to provide and you have to pay unless you put it in writing you don't want it. I can't think of the coverage but is similar to medical payments on auto insurance. So my stupidity allowed them to get paid for something I didn't need...in this case the medical payments because the coverage I can't seem to remember the name of not only pays medical payments but for time off of work. So a drunk hits me...not MY fault...his for being drunk and running a red light at 7:30 in the morning. I had been an amputee for 34 years at that time due to the one other accident I was in...another drunk crushed me between two cars when I was a kid. AMICA would not pay me per the policy...they aren't responsible for anything but my small amount of medical payments and the other insurance. They argued it was double coverage and I said "right, but you took the premiums and said nothing about it for years." They argued and so my attorney had to call them...they quickly paid me and he got 1/3 of my money. Way to go AMICA. Give them a try...eventually you'll be disgusted, too.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It seems service is going down with lots of insurance companies these days!
