My husband and I signed up in March with AAA, switching from Geico because our rate kept going up every 6 months even though we had not had an accident in the entire 5 years we were with them. We were never told about any cancellation fees until we called to cancel in August. They now claim that we "owed" $116 because we were cancelling within the first year. That is ridiculous in my mind, as you are not required to wait until your policy expires before you switch. Not to mention, why should you be charged additional for not wanting to deal with their bad service anymore?
Their customer service (including the supervisors) at the 1-800 line are COMPLETELY RUDE and completely incompetent. We had nothing but problems from the 2nd month with them on. They gave us a VERY acceptable quote when we signed up, but then messed up our first bill, and then continually charged us $50 more a month than what we were originally quoted. Surprising, no one could ever seem to give me a reason as to why that was other than "because you didn't pay the full amount the first month, we are billing you now for it, and you just have to deal with it". We are on a tight budget as I am a full time college student, and they had no intention of even trying to work with us. They were extremely rude almost every time I called to try to get the issues fixed. We finally decided to switch because if they couldn't even get our policy worked out right, how would they be if we actually needed them because of an accident? We didn't want to take the risk.
They also forced us to get a AAA membership per person on the policy in order to even get their auto insurance. It was so not worth the headache of dealing with them. If I would have known this is how it was going to be, we would have stayed with Geico or found a local company instead. I recommend never using AAA. They are no longer the reputable company they once were.
