I recently received a first edition of A Tree Grows In Brookly from 1943. When I compare this to the new classic edition, there are some differences. I notice that some of the sexual scenes are not as descriptive in the first edition as they are in the newer editions. —… read full review »

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn has been one of my favorite books since I was about twelve years old.  Its is the coming of age story of Francie, a young girl in Brooklyn in the 1920s.  She, and her brother Neely, deal with poverty, the coming of WWI, the loss of their father, a new sister, and numerous other events.  — I cannot tell you how much I love this book and the characters in it.  I do not want to give too much away, but my favorite chapter by far describes how Francie and Neely "catch" a Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve to bring home to their family.  … read full review »

This book is a classic and such a great time piece. A great demonstration of how our world has changed since. It'll remind you how lucky you are. I even found myself a little jealous of this little girl at times when she enjoyed the simple things so much. How wonderful it is to remember how such tiny things are so wonderful. I especially recommend it for girls pre-teen through mid-twenties. —… read full review »

A Tree Grown In Brooklyn is a MUST for all young people, IMO. While some kids today will undoubtdly find it dated and corny, the fact is it visits themes that are timeless: the struggle to grow up in a world where it seems no one understands you, the loss of a loved one, good people doing not-so-great things, the effects of addiction on a family, retaining hope in the face of adversity, etc. The storyline revolving around the lovable father who has a serious drinking problem that is completely out of control is surprising to find in a book of the era. — Another reason it's… read full review »
