A Tree Grows In Brooklyn
by
Betty Smith

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith is a novel written in 1943.  Francie Nolan, the main character, is the daughter of an alcoholic father and non-charismatic mother living in the slums of Brooklyn, New York.  We learn how Francie's parents met, her extended family and follow along with Francie as she grows up in poverty in Brooklyn, NY.

My Viewpoint!
At the beginning of this book, I fell in love with Francie.  She was a book lover who frequented the library, daily.  I could relate with her and her love of books.  I found myself wishing that I had a fire escape outside of my house covered by a tree, so that I could read in privacy, as well.  :)
Unfortunately, as the book went on, I felt like I was getting bored and losing interest in the story.  I felt bad for Francie having a drunken father, living in poverty, etc. The story seemed to go nowhere for me after a while and I finished it...ho hum. :(

I was soooo hyped to have my hands on a copy of A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith.  I had heard all the talk over the years and decided to incorporate some "classics" into my reading rotation.  I can see what millions of readers love this book but it just didn't do it for me.

It reminded me a lot of Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, which I loved.

If you are "into" the classics, then I recommend you read this book.  Maybe you will fall in love with it like millions of other readers out there.

Don't forget a box of tissue.
