Hosseini provides a glimpse into the lives of two women; the heartaches that shatter them and the bonds that strengthen them. This is a story that has a lot of historical and cultural information. In addition, it has the drama and heart of bona fide classic.
Although I highly recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns, I can only give it four stars because the story just didn't resonate with me. Mr. Hosseini is an excellent writer, and he certainly provides some heartbreaking scenes for even readers with short attention spans. That said, once I finished the book, I didn't have that ache in my heart that I normally do when I've read something monumental. I just thought, hmmm, that was well done. I had no real feeling of needing to analyze it or think of it further.
In spite of the fact that the book didn't floor me, I do still highly recommend it. You will learn a lot about the culture of Afghanistan and the character development is top notch. I appreciate that Mr. Hosseini wrote this book and I hope that it helps to educate readers in the West about cultural similarities and differences in Afghanistan. It is much more than a story of women living in a war-torn nation. It is a story about life and death, both physically and emotionally. It asks us to question what we believe, and what do we value? What would we kill for, and what is worth dying for? It shows us that even the weakest among us can find an abundance of strength when our loved ones are in danger. For all of those reasons, and a thousand others, this is a book well worth reading
