I have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) or Lupus to the everyday person. This is an autoimmune disease and the form I have effects my systemic organs, thus the name. On rare occasions I will develop the discoid form-that's the skin rash and lesions. As my illness progresses my immune system becomes more compromised. What this means is my body loses the ability to ward off disease and infections and through the years I have developed sensitivity and allergies to products, medications and other things that I might not have been allergic to in an earlier time.
One such sensitivity is that of topical analgesic ointments. I am allergic to Polymyxin B Sulfate, Neomycin, and Bacitracin Zinc. What this means is I cannot use everyday first-aid ointments such as Neosporin and Polysporin . I have to use a medicated ointment that is $35 for a small tube. So what happens if I get injured, develop a skin rash or what have you and I don't have the medicated ointment with me? Simple. I have to use Vaseline. It is a pure ointment with no toxic agents that can harm my skin.
One day I was reading the directions for use on a tube of A&D Ointment. It said it could be used on scrapes and minor burns. That sounded like it could be a first-aid style ointment.
Product Description from the Internet:
INDICATIONS: A+D Original Ointment at every diaper change to prevent your baby from ever getting diaper rash. Use at every diaper change to help prevent diaper rash from ever occurring, especially at bedtime when exposure to wet diapers may be prolonged. Safe to use at every diaper change. Ointment specially formulated with vitamins A and D as well as lanolin. Helps heal dry, chafed skin and minor cuts. A&D Original Ointment For skin irritation:temporarily protects minor cuts, scrapes, burns and sunburn, helps treat and temporarily protects chafed, chapped, cracked, or windburned skin and lips. A&D Original Ointment For diaper rash: Helps treat and prevent diaper rash. Protects chafed skin or minor skin irritation due to diaper rash and helps seal out wetness.
I took it to my dermatologist and my endocrinologist and asked them to look at the active ingredients and to let me know if this was something I could possibly use. The verdict came back positive. Yes, we say go for it and let's see what it does for you. Since then I have found a variety of uses for A&D Ointment.
I use it on my bikini-zone after shaving. It prevents those little razor bumps and little blood spots and unlike Sally Hansen's Bikini Zone; it doesn't have alcohol in it so it doesn't burn or tingle when you first apply it. It also doesn't stain your panties.
I use it as a form of lip balm. It smells pretty good and keeps your lips moist and prevents them from drying out. And if they are already chapped it helps them heal.
Recently I burned myself on the toaster oven at my friend's house. Since she has a baby grandson she had some the ointment at her house and I was able to apply it to the burn.
My cousin Tiffany was riding on my brother's Harley and burned the inside of her leg and we applied it to the burn and now months later she has only a trace of what would have been a nasty scar.
You can get A&D ointment as the original Diaper Rash ointment or as the Diaper Rash/Skin-Care Formula. It comes in a 1.5 oz and 4 oz. tubes as well as a 1 lb. jar.
I keep a 4 oz. tube in my vanity and carry the 1.5 oz. tube in my sport bag so I have it with me wherever I go.
These are prices consistent with K-Mart and Wal-Mart
