300 Review Summary

A "nonstop action movie," 300 is based on a comic book, as well as history. Reviewers were glued to their seats with 300's "imagery and Matrix-inspired fantastic action scenes." In this ultimate fight for glory, the historical accuracy isn't always evident, but it makes for a great story nonetheless with a great plot that is easy to follow. Because 300 is a historical epic with "brutal, gruesome, bloody and vicious war scenes," it isn't meant for children or others easily bothered by gore.

I am a student of history and so I was more than intrigued by the movie 300 (2006) the graphic novel retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae in Greece written by Fran Miller.  The year was 480 B.C., and a force of 300 Spartans from the now legendary city-state of Sparta under King Leonidas defends Greece...

300 (2006)

This movie is a version of the 300 Spartans story that comes from a comic book by Frank Miller.  Now why Frank Miller had to deviate from the historical story which is interesting enough itself is a question that occurred to me.  If he were going to tell a different story, why didn't he just...

I give 300 a B. It's worth a watch. Really. But it's not for those that dont like gore, blood, and violence. So, if you see it, be prepared. And, if you are prepared and know what you are getting into,  you may just like it.

300 recounts the 480 B.C.'s Battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans took a stand against the invading Persian hordes. Led by King Leonidis they fend off legions of very freaky attackers-- which get worse and worse as time passes. While nearly the entire 2 hours focus on fighting, you find yourself cheering for these 300 heroic men that support their belief systems and...

I give this film 5 stars because it does exactly what it is intended to do and does it very well. I can't imagine how it could be done better. At the same time Irecognize that it is not a film that everyone wants to see or a message that resonates with everyone. 300 is based on a graphic novel that was in turn based loosely on history, two steps away from actual history at best. That is not particularly troubling because the film makes no attempt to teach history. There is enough epic fantasy and specatcle in the many animals and warriors from Xerxes' army for anyone to recognize the stylized... read full review »

Friends, geeks, film lovers, lend me your ears;
I come to bury 300, not to praise it;
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones,
So let it be with 300 ... The noble reviewers
Hath told you 300 was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath 300 answered it ...
Here, under leave of The Hollywood Reporter and the rest,
(For The Hollywood Reporteris an honorable site;
So are they all; all honorable reviewers)
Come I to speak of 300's stupidity ...
It was a stupid and mindless film to me:
But reviewers says it was ambitious;
And reviewers are honorable...

So here is the basic scoop on "300" (in other words, this is why I hated it):
1) No Characterization at all - I won't really call it bad acting because since the actors didn't have squat to work with (this is most important to me because I am first and foremost, when it comes to film and theater, an actor).
2) Narrator - I don't need my intellegence insulted by some dude explaining to me what I am watching
3) American Freedom cliches - enough said
4) I suppose that the cinematography was alright - the fighting got old after about 10 minutes, though - spartan flips persian (or various kinds) over his...

The spouse and I watched this and can only say that was a couple hours of our life we'll never get back.  The acting was so bad and the lines so over the top that it was a terribly funny film, even when it wasn't trying to be.  Led to a lot of jokes around our house that began with "Spartans!" drawn out loudly with extra phlem in a bad British accent for appropriate drama.

While the imagery was interesting to watch for a short period of time, the whole overly CGI/ comic booky feel prevented us from being even the slightest bit sympathetic to the characters.   Even the overly sculpted bodies...

First thing I have to say is, I don't usually like movies based on comic books.  I know, this is a "graphic novel", which to me means "a fat, pretentious comic book".  After I saw the movie, I got the "graphic novel" from the library out of curiosity.  The movie is way better, trust me girls!  No love scene in the book.  Gorgo barely gets a panel.  She might as well not be there at all.

Anyway, since I'm too cheap to go out to the movies, and DVDs have all the nifty extras, I was really looking forward to this one.  Big Gerard Butler fan here.  And muscles.  I really like lots of muscles! ...

I am not one to watch movies with war stories or all about fighting. When my husband suggested that we go see this movie, I didn't want to at all. I figured I would be sitting bored through the whole movie, but I was wrong. I enjoyed this movie immensly.I have even watched it a few times since it came out on dvd. It draws you in with the character stories and plot.

There is a lot of action, so you aren't sitting there waiting for something good to happen. Although the movie has a lot of blood and gore, it is still a great movie to watch. The story is good, the characters are well developed, and...

ok, so honestly I wonder how long it did take for the casting of this movie. Not one person is unfit. But, moving on....This movie if high intensity action from beginning to end. It is certainly not a movie you want your children to see as it is packed with gore and violence. However, if you are like me you love those kinds of movies. I loved the fight scenes in the movie and they were very well corrorgraphed. I would definately recommend this movie to anyone who liked Gladitor cause you're going to love 300!

This movie is an absolute must see!!! I am not a lover of war movies, but the visual effects, costumes, acting, and yes love story, was perfection at it's best!

I have bought the movie and loaned it out to many friends!  Gerard Butler is so what you would imagine King Leonidas to be. If only all men could be raised Spartans...LOL!

Great movie to watch with date or spouse.  Wouldn't recommend to those under 17, has sexual content and nudity.

The movie 300 is an excellent movie. The animation is awesome as well. It is not a movie for children under at least 15. It does have some nudity but it isnt bad. The determination the spartan leader has for his country is unbelievable. He has a do or die policy. It is great for history buffs and just the pure imagination of the movie. This movie is a must see and with all the action and suspense how can someone get bored. Rent the movie, sit back and enjoy. It will not disappoint you.

What can i say? This movie was excellent! Nonstop action from beginning to end & the best part is that the historical events are all quite accurate. While this movie is most definitely NOT for children as well as certain persons who may be offended or disgusted by some extremely brutal, gruesome, bloody and vicious war scenes. But for those of you who enjoy that sorta thing..... this is a MUST SEE MOVIE!!

Definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen. The acting was amazing and the action scenes just blew me away. The fact that is was based on the true story of the battle of thermopoly made even more exciting.  If you like action flicks, you definitely have to see this one!
