300 (2006)

This movie is a version of the 300 Spartans story that comes from a comic book by Frank Miller.  Now why Frank Miller had to deviate from the historical story which is interesting enough itself is a question that occurred to me.  If he were going to tell a different story, why didn't he just make it up.  Any ten year old boy who liked playing war would know enough about the 300 Spartans to know the Persians were not Africans, yet that's what Xerxes was. He also was festooned with enough strings of gold chain, piercings, and face makeup  that his sexual orientation was questionable. This was also the case with several other Persians yet the Spartans were all butch and looked like they were recruited from Gold's Gym.

I have to say that the action was pretty good but it was all Computer Generated with fake backgrounds making it look almost like panels from a comic book.  When you are doing a moving picture it seems like movement would be desirable yet they often used the comic book large face with full length character in the background and very little movement. The fighting was mostly slo-mo and the leader King Leonidas mentioned that Spartans always fight in a phalanx - a tight formation of men shoulder to shoulder and several deep yet the fighting scenes all showed single individuals doing spear or sword - fu - totally at odds with what Leonidas said.

I do consider myself a history buff and have read the story of the Spartans in Herodotus and a few other old tomes and felt that Frank Miller in his MTV treatment of the story did a disservice to the memory of an heroic defense by brave men in 480 BC.

It's bogus, I can say that for it. Thanks for stopping by and making your opinion known, bud. ;>

I'd rather watch the History channel's version, so I guess I'm in the same "thumbs down" corner as you, my friend.

You can safely miss this, Gigi. Thanks for stopping by! :>

Well, if Jenny didn't like it then most likely I wouldn't either. I generally don't get into the superhero flicks; except for the dynamic duo cartoon and the Superman movies with Christopher Reeves. Thanks for the thumbs down--I will stay away ;+) ~Gigi

I am a history buff and I like to see the history. Not an MTV skit that they say is history. ;>

You know, I wasn't impressed with this one either. I thought I was the only one!

In response to LaurieM's comment from Dec 1, 2008 at 8:54AM:

Hey, it's visually a treat if you like half naked guys but the story has all the veracity of a fairy tale. Not good if you want the real history but aimed at comic book readers.

Meri wrote on Dec 1, 2008 at 9:08AM

Half naked guys you say? oops! I digress. Thanks for the warning.

Right, if he wanted to make something up, why didn't he make it ALL up? ;>

I agree with you, George -- if something is purported to be history then by Golly it should be HISTORY!
