First thing I have to say is, I don't usually like movies based on comic books. I know, this is a "graphic novel", which to me means "a fat, pretentious comic book". After I saw the movie, I got the "graphic novel" from the library out of curiosity. The movie is way better, trust me girls! No love scene in the book. Gorgo barely gets a panel. She might as well not be there at all.Anyway, since I'm too cheap to go out to the movies, and DVDs have all the nifty extras, I was really looking forward to this one. Big Gerard Butler fan here. And muscles. I really like lots of muscles! All the CG stuff, who cares? All stories got to have a STORY, right. How it gets told is secondary. Who's lookin' at the scenery anyway, there are MUSCLES! Not just great looking muscles, but useful, slo-mo fighting almost like dancing muscles. Scene 14. Need I say more?
While this movie is about the 300 Spartans giving all for their country, that is just on the surface. The real story here is about that amazing connection that can happen in a marriage. Leonidas leaves knowing he'll never come back, and you see that on his and Gorgo's faces, not a word needed. Kudos to the actors for that. Some of the lines were pretty cheesy, but they made it work. His last thoughts are of his love, his wife. Never fails to make me tear up. Don't we all wish for that powerful kind of love? Yeah this is a great action movie, but it's just plain a great movie because of the demonstration of love, loyalty and honor. Don't see too much of any of those these days.
