3:10 to Yuma —

I love a good western. Some have a good story. Others have a good setting, sound track or actors. Some, like the spaghetti westerns, leave an indelible imprint on the national lexicon. Outside social situations I rarely watch a film twice. I will watch this one twice, maybe more. It had a great story with great acting and you can enjoy it on several levels. If all you want is action, this is film is for you. But, you can also enjoy this story for complex character development.

When I was a kid, my dad pointed out that the draw common to all westerns is that it is the place where values and power are played out in the setting of anarchy. That's because there was so little government in the frontier. People were responsible for themselves, their own defense and their general well being with little or no support from government, law, bureaucracies, infrastructure or even social structure. I mention this because it has everything to do with how these characters are developed. Power, respect, skill, intelligence and values guide the decisions of these characters (and the results they experience). Watching this all play out with suspense was the icing on the cake for me. I highly recommend it!

I live in ATL area, too, and also am a movie reviewer. I'll need to check this out although I have a DVD of the original 1957 movie with Glenn Ford.

My mom likes Russell Crow. We're going to see this one this weekend. Jo
