27 Dresses —

I had wanted to see 27 Dresses but it never seemed like a theater-flick for me since there were no special effects or anything like that.  So when my mom caught it on a movie channel, I thought it was the perfect time to watch!  27 Dresses was cute, but it wasn't quite what I expected.

The Story: Jane has loved weddings ever since she was a little girl.  She's a great friend too, so great that at the start of the movie we see her rushing back and forth between 2 weddings of 2 good friends who asked her to be a bridesmaid.  She rents a cab for the night to take her between the two, and changes dresses on the way.  Then there's Kevin, he writes those cheesy Wedding Announcements in a local paper... those same cheesy announcements that Jane practically cries over each week.  Kevin sees Jane at one of these 2 weddings, and starts to become intrigued by her when he finds out just how many weddings she's been in.  He begs his boss to give him a shot at a front page story for the Style section, and sets off to find out all he can about Jane.

There was one thing I didn't expect about this movie.  I thought we would be seeing more weddings!  Instead, those 2 weddings we saw at the beginning were essetially her 26th and 27th weddings.  The theme of "always a bridesmaid, never a bride" was definitely the main point of this movie, making it so it wasn't so much a comedy but more of a drama-romance.  I prefer comedies, and I should have realized this would be more of a romance, but for some reason I expected it to be hilarious.

I enjoyed all the actors.  Katherine Heigl started as Jane and she is just such a likeable person that her character drew you in.  Her friendly, positive attitude has you wondering how she can go through so many weddings and still keep a smile on her face.  James Marsden is great as Kevin, the reporter who seems intrigued by Jane for more reasons than one.  He's a sweet guy who is down on marriage and down on love - the complete opposite of Jane.

Edward Burns was a great choice as George, Jane's boss who she has a huge crush on.  He's also very likeable making it easy to see why Jane is so infatuated by him.  Because of these 2 likeable guys, you were never sure what would happen for Jane.  Finally, Malin Akerman plays Tess, Jane's sister who comes to visit and causes some drama along the way.

Overall I'd say this was Cute, not hilarious, not overly romantic, just cute.  There were no major twists and turns as everything kind of worked out like I thought it would.  There may have been a surprise or two throughout, but most of the events I saw coming from a mile away.  Probably the only funny part was when Jane was trying on all her theme dresses from weddings past.  It was crazy to see what she supposedly wore, but it would have been more fun to see the actual weddings she was in.  This seems like more of a chick-flick then a date movie and I'm 95% sure my husband would never stay awake through this.  If you have some girls together, teens and up, then you should have some fun watching it.  Enjoy!!

Nice review. My favorite scene from this movie was the Elton John sign-along. Couldn't stop laughing. :)

I have this movie in my DVD collection and bought it right when it was released on new movie Tuesday. I had some girls from my church over and we wanted to watch it. Good thing for me that I have the TVG on the DVD player in my living room. I would have been very embarrassed if Lizzie and Victoria would have heard the language. We still enjoyed the movie but it's not one that I would loan out.

Hmm...always a bridesmaid never a bride--maybe my noose from weeks ago is working because that should be my life motto ;+) ~Gigi
