We bought this vehicle new in 2000 and almost 8 years later, she is still up and running despite being rear ended twice and having over 170K miles on her.  We are on our third set of tires, second set of brakes, second set of struts (but remember the mileage, so this is not the fault of the vehicle or its design)  We have the 6 cylinder engine, and I have always been confident when having to merge into expressway or highway traffic situations.  I have no idea what it would take to redline this vehicle as I have never seen the tach run up over 4K rpm and the redline isn't until 6.5-7K rpm....We have the auto stick option, but it didn't seem to make a difference in our gas mileage, so we didn't use the stick feature very much.  The cruise control was right on the money, and still is.  We have always gotten better mileage than the sticker promised, and even though she is an old lady, we are still getting around 22 city and almost 32 highway on regular fuel.  When she was newer, we could get her up to 37 highway.   Routine oil changes and tire rotations is about all that it has really required of us.  I just replaced headlights for the second time.  I have lost track of how many wiper blades we have replaced.   And I have only needed about two tune-ups in all this mileage, and two fuel filters.  I am kind of bummed out that the Intrepid line is gone, but based upon this experience, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Dodge.  Our average cost to own and operate this vehicle has been really low.  The trunk space is phenomenal, and we do have the fold down rear seat, so cargo has never been a problem.  It is a very comfortable ride, and as proven by two accidents...a very safe vehicle.  In one instance, we were rear ended by a Chevy Trail Blazer on the highway doing about 45 mph and while the trunk and quarter panel looked pretty nasty, nobody was injured at all, and the cases of my mother's antique crystal in the trunk were undamaged.   My son is 6'4" and can comfortably ride in the back seat.
